I would like to see some information on the oiling sytem on those lay-down motors, and longevity information.

I only ask because we all know the only oil the cam gets is drainback from the head. The one with the lifter side up is going to need some added help to keep the camshaft in it. :D

I have followed Feet's buildup for years. He has had many issues he had to solve just to keep pistons in it. It was originally carburated, and it ate pistons regularly. It is EFI now. It also started out as a 4 speed car. :)

He has also done major fab work on the brake system. IIRC, it has AMG brakes on it now.

He had a good thread a while back on Moparts where he had taken it to the track again. It ran mid/low 12's at like 119 mph. He has a tight converter and long gear in it. :shock:

Only difference was a big L-bend oil pan and matching pickup tube.

They locked the Moparts thread but the motor was still rated 145HP in the article.

How did they oil the cam? Were the motors not completely flat? :?

Thread locked on Moparts? Couldn't have been over the comments about the last picture now, could it? :lol:

The article does not go into any of the engine specifics....it was mostly about the endurance testing they did and the versatility of the engine for commercial use and pleasure use. Yes, the motors were positioned completely flat. The chick with the yardstick was showing the height of the engines as only 17" tall and the article went on about the space savings they offered while on their sides.

Each engine used 12gph at wot compared to 14 for a 92 hp outboards. They completed a 300 hour test in 44 days duplicating the following conditions: Deep sea Fishing runs, water ski tow runs, and races in all types of weather conditions, stop and go, high and low speed runs.

Shake down test: 1 hour at 2400rpm, 1 hour at 2800rpm and 15 min at 4000. This test was repeated over and over.

Day one test: 10 minutes at idle followed by 2 hours of WOT and then one hour at 50% wot

Day 2 test: idle for 15 min then 2800 rpm for 3.75 hours followed by 3600 rpm for 3.75 hours and concluding with a 4000rpm period (no time given) and finally a idling session

Day 3 test is the sportsman test. Just getting in and going. Normal type of stuff.

Day 4 test consisted of pulling multiple skiers up and running the boat at wot for 15 minutes. The engine is then slowed to idle to simulate starting with a skier(s) from a stop. This test is performed for 7 hours.

Days 5 to 15 repeat test 4 for a total of 300 hours.

This was 3 years of usage.

If they changed nothing but the pan, how did they keep the valve cover from filling up and holding oil? :?
