My son lost the brakes in his 63 dart 270 (4 drum, no power assist). luckily he was going slow and used the e-brake to get to the curb. Checked it out last night. Not losing any fluid, reservoir was full. When I pushed on the brake pedal it had resisitance to a point, then went to the floor. I ordered a new master cylinder (the current one looks VERY OLD). Wheel cylinders were replaced this summer and I can't find any leaks in the lines.

Does this sound like the master cylinder has gone bad? Does to me.

I'll pick up the new one this evening.

Rear Cup holds the fluid in the master
Front Cup pressurizes system.

Bad front cup, fluid would bypass it with some pressure.

Take the top off the reservoir and have someone push the brakes.

When they hit the failure point you should see a squirt of fluid going back into the reservoir thru the compensation port when the front cup fails.

Yup, sounds like a dead master to me.

A 63 has a single pot master; there is no front or rear reservoir unless it's been converted to a dual MC.

Growing older is unavoidable but growing up is strictly optional.

Which would be a great improvement, and now would be a good time to do it.
