Post subject: Hey Doc! Which oil??
PostPosted: Thu Aug 15, 2002 11:00 am
I have to change the oil in my '72 Duster with 84,000 miles and my '69 Valiant with 94,000 miles. I'm not sure what the best grade of oil is for these cars. I used 10w30 in my Duster and I've been driving it quite a bit on 80-90 degree days without using any oil. The valiant smokes a bit when cold and does use a bit of oil. What do you recommend??

Why such thick oil? Personaly I run 30w year round, Does it help quiet down the noisy rockers or preserve the oil pump gear better?

With all the talk about failed oil pump gears, we're talking about running 0W-30 Mobil One. Anyone tried this stuff? I am a long time Mobil One user, but we use the 10W-30 (Wife's VW) and 25W-50 (my Crownline boat). Any advice about changes to bearing clearances?

I run Quaker-State 10w-30 in all my engines.

I run 15-50 Mobil 1 in my slant 6. We also use the 15-50 Mobil 1 in our motorhome with a 440 magnum. Never any problems with either. Seems the synthetic lasts longer before breaking down.

Ron,

I goofed when I said 25W50 it is the 15W50 Mobil One. I agree it's great stuff. I haven't tried the new 0W30 they are offering. I'm wondering if the 0W30 will help the loading issue on the small oil pump gear in the /6?
