well autozone sold me the wrong thermostat, i wanted there best so i got the mr. gasket #4365. well when i installed the t-stat it didnt fit too well but i (like a dumb a**) installed it anyway. well i was driving home and all the sudden my dart overheated like crazy.water & steam everywhere! so i pulled off the road let her cool down and then drove the rest of the way home. i pulled up steaming and my neighbors where like what the ....

so i am hoping this is a wrong or bad thermostat i never had this problem untill i put it in. my old one was kinda dead temp gauge didnt werk now it does and its up there.

so as soon as she cools down i am gonna drive the 2 mi to autozone and tear them a new one. then install a oem t-stat in the parking lot.

oh i met this chick today that has a dart swinger tatooed on her lower back.

I had a new thermostat stick on me... overheated my Dart pretty quickly.

I also put one in backwards one time :oops: doing a late night repair. That will make it overheat quicker than anything!

Yeah, if you get a part that doesn't fit correctly, don't try to force it. Find out what's the trouble. If the new thermostat didn't look like the old one, it would've been a good idea to exchange it rather than try to force it into the engine. Driving the car with that improper thermostat in it might not be such a good idea...

well i limped it up to autozone with steam comming out of everywhere!

the other prople on the road must of thought i was insane! (i am!)

imagine a 73 green dart with a spikey haired punk rocker in a leather jack sticking out of the window to navagate the car. ... btw i am in my 30's and not some kid

i pulled the bad t-stat and it kinda exploded when i took it out.

i got a decent one that looked like the orginal and a new gasket plus they gave me coolant to replace what i lost. and i drove her home and really fast trying to heat the engine up. and no issues.

problem solved & a lesson learned.

she came with that dent. but its her only scar from a very mistreated life. with some help from my family she is going in my brothers shop for some body and paint in jan or feb.

The chain store parts houses have preened the 160 degree and 180 degree thermostats, now stocking just 195 degee models. That certainly wouldn't have caused the overheat you described, but you really don't need to run these old bats at 195 degrees, either.

195° is fine especially in winter and is the stock temperature in '73. 180° works well, too, and is generally my preferred temperature on carbureted Mopars to avoid heat-related carburetion issues. 160° is a poor idea.

My 195 stat contributes nicely to a warm interior during the cold winter months here in New England.

Combined with the AFCO aluminum radiator, it brings the temp gauge up to about 1/3 of the needle travel (between the "T" and "E" of TEMP).

i'm running the 195F t-stat and temp gauge looks good (thanks to joshie225 i have a working temp gauge! pulled it from the duster cluster thx mate!) and yes i have heat! that's a nice thing in oregon! and she is running great!

just got two sets of ngk plugs fed ex'd down from my brother's shop in seattle. poped the metal rings off the plugs and gaped em. + installed new spark plug tube gaskets. do i have to replace those everytime i change plugs cause thats what i have been doing

she purrrs.

No you don't have to replace the seals every time, just when they get hard and start to leak. If you think you need heat in OR, try Chicago for the next few months !!!

back in the days when i was a professional musicain i played many a winter show in chi. opening up for skinny puppy,kmfdm,gboa,pigface,thrill kill cult and nin. i also rember my u know what freezing off when i had no heat in my 68 valient w/ the vent cover off! i also rember flying down the skyway in triple digits.

thanks for the heads up on the sp seals, i thought so but i bought 3 sets to be safe. and i never did much work on my valient my brother did everything so it's now my turn to do it.
