Hello,

I an the new owner of a 1971 valiant project, and i am on the "evaluation stage" to see what to do next, but as you all know, with the previous owner being a kid, there's lots of tie wraps, unused vauum lines and neglected hoses, etc.
pending the apropriate hayes book, i wanted to ask if anybody had a "vacuum port" on the fuel pump, what does it do? what is it connected to?
I am not totally new to mopars, i had a 68 charger i had to sell and am familiar with v8, this is my 1st /6.

thanks for the help.

Welcome on the board! Sounds like you'll be fixing a lot of "IPO" problems (idiot previous owner...).

There is no "appropriate Haynes book". The Haynes books are full of errors and leave out a great deal of the vital information you need. See here for information on the only good uses for a Haynes book. You will want to buy a factory service manual (FSM) as described in this post.

The "extra" hose nipple on your fuel pump, see here
.

Hi,

thanks, i'll get those books,

I've been trying to get it started, and i just can't,
there is spark, there is fuel going in, so it is a timing issue,

so checked the wires, the points, and they look ok. but i guess my question is, is there a common thing on these engines that will mess up the timing? or if you have any ideas for me to try, i'll appreciate it.

thanks.

If you've got fuel, spark, and air, then timing does become a likely cause of the failure to start. Either spark timing or cam timing. The distributor on a slant-6 is gear-driven, not slot-driven like the V8s you're familiar with, so it's possible for the dist to be installed in numerous wrong positions. With the timing mark at 0° (TDC) the dist rotor should point to the 4:00 position (the dist cap's #1 terminal is just clockwise of the locating notch, as viewed from above). But, the other thing to keep in mind is that the crank pulley is a 2-piece design; outer ring w/the timing mark is bonded to the inner member via rubber material. With time and use, the outer ring can slip relative to the inner hub, so the TDC mark no longer indicates TDC. You may want to check TDC. You can stick a straightened-out coathanger wire or similar into the frontmost spark plug hole, and turn the engine by hand (easier with no spark plugs installed) until the wire stops moving upward out of the plug hole. Then, check where the mark on the crank pulley is relative to the timing indicator.

See links off this post for tune-up recommendations and such.

Fixed bad link in referenced post -- you can now access the tune-up parts and techniques link.
