I can put 245s on the Valaint.....

The Mustang wheels will fit with 1"spacers
No argument there, I've got 235's on mine and I believe the 245's will fit fine (which you have confirmed), and 8" wide Mustang wheels fit fine (regardless of how you mount them).

My question is, I believe Lou has a bigger wheel in the back than an 8" which makes me think he has a bigger tire than a 245, but how?

Two pictures of the car show the same wheel front and rear ('99 Cobra?), the one from the right rear shows a black centered wheel and looks like the FR500 wheel. Those don't come narrower than 9".

Good to see progress being made Lou! :D :D :D

Sandy's right, red cars are faster, but they eat more parts too.

Sorry to wet down the blanket on the "red" issue. Orange is the color! I guess it won't be very fast...

The wheels are indeed FR500 17X9's. They are, remarkably, 20lbs ea, whereas the GT 17X8 Mustang rims are 21 lbs, which is even pretty light for that size. I will start by running 255/40-17s. The body shop squeezed out the quarters about 1/4-3/8", which will be enough for ample clearance on the 255s. The 245s have been fine with not-quite-perfect centering and only hit mildly at max cornering forces.

I may move the springs in ~0.8" at some point and go for 275s.

Almost have the new Ford 8" in there with the Wilwood/Cobra discs...

Lou

Hey all,

Been wrenching a little on the V recently. See pics:

Rear Disc Brake setup

Rear discs are done, new axle installed, fuel cell reinstalled, FR500 17X9 wheels and 255/40-17s are tested and fit fine. I feel pretty confident that 275/40-17s would work with a 3/4" inboard spring relocation. We'll wait on that for a while... Just have one "mockup" tire for now and will likely go with BFG R-1s in the 255/40 size, which have gotten lots of good press.

New Kirkey Roadrace Intermediate aluminum seat is sitting in the car and will be mounted soon. Still trying to decide whether to make major front suspension and steering/pedal control changes. All I need for the engine is to fab up a new roadrace oilpan.

I also scoped out relocating the engine and it looks like 1" rearward is all that can happen without major firewall reworking.

I find myself also thinking about a dry sump oiling system so I could lower the engine/trans a bit and not worry about oil slosh. This is likely too expensive at the moment, but we can dream, can't we?

My guess is the car won't be ready until May or June, but both Darts are in fine shape, so there's no big hurry. Plenty to do on them and parts sitting around too, time willing.

With luck, I'll have all 3 cars race ready this Summer, at least for drags. Now, where can I find some willing drivers?

Lou

OK, updated with direct pic links. Check out the flickr link above for many more.

Also, weighed the car with no engine, trans, glass, etc... 1661lbs with 59 % on the rear.

Been working on the roadrace oilpan. Probably 1/3 done. Will be 3/4" lower than stock with some kickouts to bring up to about 7 qts total and lots of baffling. Got a local sheetmetal place to bend up a box for me that worked like a charm and took 'em 20 minutes to make 2. I made a template out of cardboard and they duplicated...

Cheers,

Lou

Thanks, guys.

No LV this year, Sandy. Super busy this Spring. Hope I can do it next year with this car, or the 64 Dart.

Michael, the hitch on racing my cars is that you'd have to come and pick one up at my house in Blacksburg, VA... Probably the '68 Dart, which should run 17s at least this year, will be the "loaner" car at first.

Lou

Hey Lou,

That Wilwood caliper isn't the small GM metric type, right!? I got mine ordered for the Dart today by the way... :D

I also noticed you used lowering blocks. Since the FirmFeel spring hangers didn't work out for me I'm thinking maybe blocks too.. Where did you get yours? Or did you make them yourself?

Are those SPAXers on there?

I noticed the brake rotor has elipses machined into them. What the theory behind this? Performance or noise control?
