If its too good to be true....

Thought I remember reading that those crate motors should be taken apart and everything checked since factory machine work wasn't the best. That was a while back though...
That used to be true, but supposedly MP has taken their crate motor business to reputable engine shops now. Ray Barton will be building some of the big Hemis, can't remember who else they said would be doing them. Cummins Reman is not building them anymore.

I havn't heard that. This is not a "Crate" motor, even though it'll be coming in a crate. This is a production over run motor. This/These motors where slated for the Chrysler 300C and Charger R/Ts. Dosen't make much sence to me unless the 2009 cars are going to be different. Not sure if "crate" makes a difference, but I am not openning a new motor on a rumor.

The motor overran the production line and fell to the floor.................

If they are production engines then they are made in Mexico from what I understand. The crate motors are cast in the Cummins foundry and assembled in the US, or least that's what I've been told. I wouldn't open it up either. The stock block should easily be capable of producing well over 400 hp with minimal mods. With the FAST system and decent induction and exhaust it will be a very strong powerplant.

Actually it does make sense. If they're changing the engine for '09 then they wouldn't be able to use them in future vehicle production. The only other alternative is to wholesale them to the replacement industry.

The stock 5.7 put out 340HP and 390ftlb. The dearerships that I have talked to felt that the HP was understated a bit. Maybe maybe not. It is also my understanding the adding headers alone will bring it close to 400hp. As my research continues, I am finding that the bottle neck in these motors is not the heads, its the cam. Just changing the cam out (with the headers ofcourse) pushs it to 425-450HP mark.

But I plan to leave mine alone.

Hey Bren check your mail. The guys at a mopar mag did one and they couldn't break 400hp but that was one of thier crate motors from mopar and it was fuel injected model. If you run the carb set up and use the comp cams cam for the 5.7 you should be reeeaaal happy with that motor.

You care to cite your source alleging the made in China connecting rods? Or the engines being down on power?

I don't know much about it but I understand that the powdered metal rods are the latest technology producing very strong but light structures. They are also used in the Viper V-10 engine which is known to produce horsepower well north of 1000 when properly tweaked and turbocharged. I doubt that they were made in China. The engines were indeed assembled in Mexico, at least for the first couple of years of production; I don't know if they still are.

The rods are common knowledge. How long have these Hemi's been out? I remember reading an article before they were first introduced. I was tripping about the rods. I was doing some work for a guy that designed HP automotive drive train components for ricers. Less maching is required on the powdered metal rods. My first contact with powdered metal was the crank gear on my Direct Connection double roller timing set I bought in '77.

AFA the HP? Originally they rated these engines for the truck at 347(?) I remeber reading on Moparts that people were complaining that they weren't getting the advertised HP and maybe suing Chrysler. I you want I can post a thread over there and get your answer to your questions.

You should know me well enough by now. I don't talk trash here.

Actually alot of the crate motors are remans... "thermal cycled", and 0.020" overbored... at least the 360s are.

They are also production motors that puked in testing and were repaired.

It is not uncommon to tear one down and find one crank journal ground or one cylinder oversize.

Citing common knowledge is fine for the temperature at which water boils, but not for the origin of a connecting rod. Please cite a valid source.

Moparts is not a valid source unless there is documentation posted to back up a claim. Please cite a valid source.
