Has anyone actually used one of these, or am I going to be the guinea pig? The one Dan had mentioned, wix 51806

The wix one I got has no flats on the top of the can for those oil filter sockets so it looks like I'll have to use a typical wrench to remove it come time to change it again. Probably because they were made for industrial engine use. Or maybe use one of those 3 finger type wrenches.

From the outside, it appears the standpipe goes all the way to the opposite end of the filter material. This thing should be completely full of oil. Side affect should also be that no oil comes out of it on removal hopefully. I'm all for less mess.

Is that the number Dan gave you?

I use a WIX 51515 all the time for the SL6 and my 440's. Great filter, no valve train noise on start up like the shorty filters. I get an instant 45 pounds with a couple of turns.

Who do you buy the wix filters from ? We had a independent here in town that carried them,,but it has been sold out to the Carquest chain.

All NAPA Auto parts carry them and they are NASCAR approved. Our local independent houses out here carry them as well. :D

If it did that, it'd block off the oil flow! :shock: If you shine a penlight or something in there, you'll see the nylon standpipe stops ~2" before the top of the filter media.

Ted, 51515 is the one without the inbuilt standpipe.

Remember, if you buy from NAPA, drop the leading "5" from the number to get the "NAPA Gold" (rebranded Wix) number. So the regular 51515 becomes a 1515, and the standpipe-equiped 51806 becomes an 1806.

I am using the napa 1806 on my Dart. I cant say anything about it making less mess because I haven't changed it yet. I CAN say that oil pressure comes up a lot quicker. It also "looks" to be of much higher quality then the "black" napa gold 1515 filters. It also feels heavier. The 1806 I got is white and came wrapped in shrink wrap inside the box. Even at the high cost I am very happy with it.

napa 1515 $6.00

napa 1806 $12.00

having oil pressure come up twice as fast ... priceless

Carquest store brand filters, at least the "better" ones used to be Wix;
Next time that youre in there ask, if that store's help is any good,
they'll know that answer. In pretty much their whole line, the red is Advance/Murrays/Useless zone/OReilys/etc price competitive, the blue box is the good stuff, some prod. lines also have a "gold" on top of that.
