It is a coating that is (I think) on my new gastank. It is a spectra premium tank that when I got it only says made in canada on it, no brand. The p/n from advance is CR11E. It claims to be made of Ni-Terne in their description:

I saw that my tank has a dull finish, with a little more shiny-ness in the corners where the dies did the most work.

So you know what I got, but I don't know if I should paint it or not. If it is gonna stay pewter over nickel then I'll leave it I guess? I don't plan to do the body color painted on the bottom of the car and I like to leave stainless and aluminum parts natural if possible for contrast. Maybe a nice thick coat of brushed on black enamel? I don't want to do this again in two years.

Also- should it be grounded, or isolated or doesn't matter? I know the sender needs to ground where it grips the supply nipple, but does the tank ground to the frame?

What did you do when you got your new tank?

The gauge needs to be grounded to work correctly. There is a clip that connects the metal gas line to the fuel gauge plate, and this is the grounding source. I never trusted the clip, and grounded the gauge plate with a screw eye terminal screwed to the frame. It is a possible weakness as the frame gets pretty crusty back there. Plus, the frame should be coated with rust protection. Grounding to the metal fuel line is probably not a bad choice, as it worked OK when new.

Unless you take yourcar out in salted, snowy roads, your tank will stay looking nice without paint. If you plan on driving in the snow, you might want to protect it better. Factory undercoating,(applied at the dealer usually) was more for noixe control than rust proofing. In fact, undercoating can trap moisture and promote rusting. I have seen it many times. I prefer interior padding to control noise, if that is important to you.
