The list of TRULY streetable (as in every-day) cars that run 14 seconds, let alone in the 13s is very short, and they're very expensive. Mustangs don't. Nothing front-drive does, tall tales and urban legends notwithstanding. The brand new LX cars with Hemis run almost the exact same timeslips as a '69 440 Magnum Charger R/T (mid-low 14s), and get mid 20s for mileage when driven carefully. Vipers and Vettes beat that, but look at the cost. If the manufacturers, with all the modern tech in the world, are still hitting the wall at low-14 second cars that get 20 mpg on a perfect day with 6-speed transmissions, the idea of doing it with 40-year old tech is a stretch, at best.

All that said, i still prefer the 40 year old tech and drive mine every day. But just acknowledge that I have to live with 11 mpg in the city, 15 highway and it doesn't bother me. Its still cheaper (and draws more admiration) than a payment on a Charger SRT-8

BMW's are very streetable and fast, mileage sucks when you do sport driving on ANY car. I prefer rear wheel drive, don't care nor like FWD. Viper and Vettes are NOT everyday drivers. You can't take a country road or bumpy path in general. Those are highway cars... and GOOD highway pavement.

An SRT8 Charger will run low 13s. The SRT4 Neon will run low 14s stock (Motor Trend ran a 13.9) and can be made much faster with bolt ons. Neither are Very expensive, but they aren't cheap either. A new V6 Mustang will break into the 14s and a V8 GT runs mid 13s.

The SRT4 weighs within 100 lbs of my Valiant, gets a little bit better mileage and runs the 1/4 mile over 5 seconds quicker. Heck, my 2000 diesel VW Golf would kick the crap out of my Valiant and the worst mileage I ever got with it was 34.5 MPG.

I wouldn't say anyone has hit a wall. Most everything is faster and gets better mileage than a comparable car from yesterday. There has been progress, but since gas has been so cheap for so long for the most part we used the greater efficiency to make our cars much faster and mileage only somewhat better.

If you go to the dragstrip you will see many 12, 11, and even 10 second cars that are truly streetable. The LS-1 Firebirds and Camaros come to mind, along with the LS-1 and 2 GTOs, Mustangs, SRT-8 300s and Chargers, Vettes, etc. I have seen many cars over 400 RWHP at High Speed that idled and drove like Gramma's Caddy.

That being said, you will not see any 13 second Slant cars with A/C, cast iron manifolds, single exhaust, and an engine combination so screwed up only a mother could love it.

Bren, you were dead set against headers in the car with a Slant, but are using them with the Hemi. WTF?

Also, you think having a Hemi is going to increase the value of the car? How so? It will still be a Slant A body with an oddball truck motor in it.

just a question and this ain't to drop more salt in the wound, but didn't the engine builder also screwed up on the stroker crank too? I wouldn't take any more builds to him... in fact, I believe you have enough material to sue him. Just my 2 cents...

I don't like headers mainly because they seem to leak all the time, just give it some time, and they are really hot. It turns out that my setup is pretty hot and the gasket is blown out on the rear most exhaust port, so I guess it didn't matter, should have gone with headers.
The Hemi I'll be using ceramic coated inside and out headers which should help with the heat, but will likely still leak and need attention for time to time.

I regards to value...
Look around on Ebay and other selling sites and you'll find and any car with a NONnumbers matching V8, especialy a Hemi V8 and I know theres a differnance between 5.7 and 426 hemi, selling for $7000 to $12,000 more than an otherwise comperable Slant car.
At least with the cost of the Hemi install, I'll be getting at least 50-75 cents on the dollar back if I sell it, instead of 5 cents.

Not really.
I came to him to build me a motor. I had goals in mind. He let me know that this would be the first high performance slant that he has built but its not the first high performance rodeo. We agreed that I would guide him with what ever research I came up with and he would decide if it made sence based on his years of experience in the engine performance realm. I've rebuilt lots of motors for the Ford dearlership I worked at, but these where all stock. He was more knowledgable about performance engines then I was. There where a few things that he suggested I do that I insisted not to. One such thing was to run headers. The crank was sent out to be stroked to 4.5". The shop would not stroke it more than 4.25. They felt the strenght would drop drasticly beyond that. As some may remember, my builder was offering a warranty on the motor, even on the dyno. The crank shop convinced him to only go to 4.25. The thing he did wrong was to fail to inform me of this before they went ahead. He did offer to send it back for the full stroke, which he would have to pay for, but he would not be offering the dyno warranty. I choose to keep the 4.25 stroke.
