Ok fellow Holley tuning lovers...

A month ago I hated to do it but had to post that my Holley had me whipped. I loved the "lottery" in replies as to the cause, and finally the carb. is fixed and NOT ONE of the lottery causes was the culprit. It took three weekends of rebuilding and a meeting with an old time retired nascar builder to solve the problem. The problem was kinda like the blown up space shuttle chain reaction proceeding from what you might think was a "no problem" kind of unseen error, and I sure want to tell you all want to look for because it could happen to you! I had gotten so frustrated I was about to remount my Eddy!

But first, after lots of time idling and rebuilding and running city bus-like clouds of carbon adn unburned gas out the back, I am concerned as to how the brand new head and valves can most readily be cleaned (or if they need to be cleaned). I swapped both manifolds yesterday and was taken aback at the blackgreasy soot in the exhaust ports, and of course in the tailpipe.

Is this a leave it alone kind of deal, a drip water into the intake (while running!) kind of deal, or what?

Thanks!

I reccomend the water drip. I did that to the Racing Duster to get the carbon out runs MUCH better, though the carb still needs rebuild.

You have brought us to the edge of our seat then slammed the hood! So what was the problem that you found????????????? :?:

I use water myself. In fact I have a water jug hooked up all the time. When ever I go over 2000 rpm it injects water through a #60 drill hole. Keeps her nice and clean. :D

While the water drip won't hurt a thing, Ive seen your posts here for a while, that motor isn't that old, a couple of blasts down the highway to blow the cobs out should be sufficient to clean that soot out of there; it isn't like its a 40 year old motor that some 90 year old has had that does all short trips and never gets to "warm up". Take it down the road and
blow it out all will be fine. I have to say, just to add a little salt to the wound, that  you shoulda put the Eddy back on there anyway!

Don,

I've heard that method referred to as an "Italian Tune-Up".

My little Dakota got a severe version of this when I was towing a little trailer through the Cascades. Worked that pushrod 2.5 pretty hard. 2300' elevation gain in 7 miles climbing the Siskiyou Pass South of Ashland. 3rd gear and 3-4k RPM for about 10 minutes.
