I have this engine/trans. with 2-brl. carter carb. Would like to run a 1 barrel carb. on it for gas economy.

Can I do this with my intake and use a carb. adaptor to go to the 1 barrel>?

If so, where would I get such a carb. adaptor? Names, #'s, links, etc. greatly appreciated.....

PS. My exh. manifold is cracked at this time as well (new unit 2 yrs. ago) so that might factor into the "fix my exhaust and carb. problem" scenerio...

Most people report better fuel economy with the 2-bbl. set-up.

What are you putting this into? another truck or car?

How much mileage are you looking for?

Many folks change over to what you have for more power, torque and mileage. My old 77 Plymouth Volare would get 27 mpg with the same parts, the Super Six 225 engine and 904 tranny.

Please explain a little more........

You do need to separate the intake manifold from the exhaust. Carb adaptors don't work so well....all the parts can be had on eBay or at a local junk yard.
You will also need the one barrel kick down linkage for the transmission.

I've got a '81 with the one barrel setup that I'll trade you. I'll send you the entire intake, exhaust, carb, and air cleaner with lean burn computer, if you send me your 2 barrel intake and carb. Mines a standard so I don't need the kickdown linkage, you keep that. It ran in the fall when I brought it home, so I know everything works.

If you do this, there's no need to spend money on sending the heavy exhaust manifold. There's no difference between the exhaust manifold used w/1bbl and w/2bbl.

I would not recommend trading your 2-bbl. set-up for a 1-bbl. You could sell your 2-bbl. set-up as-is and buy three used 1-bbl. set ups, or an aluminum 1-bbl. intake, 1-bbl. kickdown set-up, and new/reman 1-bbl. carburetor.
Do not use the lean burn. So that set-up would still leave you carb shopping as also.

If I were you I'd get another reman carb (~100.00 on eBay). Or get another one just like you have from Advance Auto. Just before the warranty is up, bring your old one back in and tell them it is leaking and they will exchange it with a new one, and put it on the shelf or sell it to help recover the costs...

Slants are everywhere around here. I am sure I can find you a good exhaust manifold for about $25.00. Shipping will probably be about $30.00.
Surely there are some around you...and the owners would probably be happy to sell it for $25.00-35.00.

I'll agree w/ you on the two barrel and someone else already went thru. the trouble to "upgrade" to 2-brl. before but I dont know best carb.

Since I too am debating 're-bushing' my BBS I am curious as to what the better carbs are.

I read a recent thread about someone installing a Stromberg and saying they were by far the best with better performance. I can't seem to find that thread...
What carb #/size was that. Was it a bolt on deal or did they adapt it with a plate/spacer...

What are the differences between the BBS and BBD? What are the BBS, BBD, Holley 2280, and Stromberg carbs cfm rating?

I have a stock 'Super Six' and do not know what 'size' the carb is.

i'm working thru a 2bbl upgrade now. almost have all the parts ready. i had 2 BBD's rebushed. they are different versions of the same design.
i saw that posting about the Stromberg carb. i even went so far as to buy one thru Ebay. it's not here yet. i have been thinking to move up to the Stromberg, after i get all the conversion details sorted out.
i mentioned my plan to my carb rebuilder. he told me the carter is a better carb than the Stromberg.
i have every reason to believe this guy. he's been much more than fair to me. he even rebushed one of my BBD base plates a second time, as i waited, when i wasn't happy with the play in it. lucky he did a real good job on the other one.
maybe the Stromberg posted about was just in much better condition than the BBD it replaced, whereas a solid BBD would out pace the Stromberg on an even playing field?

whether i do the Stromberg or not, i'm looking at a progressive Weber 2 bbl, farther down the road...
