What's the difference between the /6 vs 318 Carter BBD carbs? Or how about a Holley reman #64-3107? I didn't think there was any real difference. Maybe I'm wrong?
I've got a couple other questions I've put in another post.

There are lots of differences in the 1 1/4" BBD over the years (a couple decades worth)...


In a nut shell:

The 318 BBD has bigger venturies than the super six version.
The late BBD's for the 318 (70's-up) have a couple of holes drilled in the throttle plates to compensate for idling issues with the emissions era 318.
The super six is jetted a bit leaner.
The super six uses a unique choke pull off 'tab' compared to the 318 version (if you use the 318 version the thermostatic choke lever will bind up and keep the choke plate at 1/2...)


Not familiar with the Holley reman is it a Holley Model 2280?

There's an article on the conversion and covers the carbs briefly, Dan posted a rather large, but definitive service bulletin on the BBD (40 pages with lots of diagrams, pics, and explainations...Thanks Dan!)

Not sure on the Holley model, but I think it was meant for a 318.

So, what I'm hearing is I should be running the slant version of the BBD?

Yup. Mid-1950s through late 1980s!

And much, much more. pre-'66 vs. '66-up air cleaner mounting provisions...atmospheric vs. ducted vs. no external bowl vent...air-bleed pre-'77 vs. solid-fuel '77-up design...hot idle compensator vs. none...lots of different calibrations...etc.

The 64-3107 is a remanufactured BBD for '78 318s.

Today I looked at the carb I have on the Beater Valiant, and noticed the '74 BBD doesn't have a hole in the choke plate like its 1977+ bretheren... I also noticed the '74 BBD didn't like cold starts so much either... Drilled the choke plate with a 'C' drill bit... fires right up cold and warms up and idles nicely.... Not sure if that was an engineering error in transistioning the BBD to the emissions era or what...

Lot of fun information to ponder...
