 Post subject: Valve Cover Grommets
PostPosted: Wed Jan 23, 2008 9:33 am
I did some searching with no luck. I have a 71 225 engine, and the two valve cover grommets (one for the breather, and one for the PCV valve) are very hard.

Does anyone have the part number(s) for these two grommets? I would like to replace them.

Thanks!

EDIT:
After a lot of searching on rockauto.com I was able to find the PCV valve to valve cover grommet, but I still can't find one for the breather.

NAPA has them, I just take the old one with me for my 440's

On my Dart I am using the ones off eBay.
Look under KMJ Performance

I'm not sure if those will work, I have the stock valve cover, that has the PCV valve port, breather port, and oil cap.

Does anyone have a part number for the breather port grommet?

OK I just went through my stash.

Being that you found the PVC gasket already.
A Mr. Gasket 5339 works for the air intake, 1 1/4".
It comes with two in a pkg. for $3.99 so you have a spare.

By the way the eBay ones work just fine for the air intake.

Ted,
Thanks a TON for your help man! I'm having trouble finding the Mr. Gasket 5339 online, or even at an autoparts store...so I think i'll get the ebay ones that you linked.

Thanks again!

I wish this site would allow you to add a .jpeg

Just did a quick search for you under Mr. Gasket
Spectre also markets them.
Application: For all valve covers with 1-1/4" breather hole (use Spectre grommet PN 5339 or 5333)

Spectre 5339 is for a thicker, cast aluminum type valve cover.

I am using it on the chrome valve cover. It is just stamped sheet metal.

I knew I was suspicious...
These grommets don't work, I just measured and my valve cover's breather grommet has a 1" hole. I took the grommet out since it's really old and hard, and the valve cover hole is 1.5".

So it looks like I need a grommet that fits into a 1.5" hole, and has an ID of 1"

Any leads?

Only caveat I would add to 65Dodge100's suggestion is to make sure the grommets are made of oil-resistant material if you order through a maker of generic seals/grommets. His first link specifies Buna N composition, which IS oil resistant.

I think the grommet I need is this one, the larger one in this picture:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MOPAR-NO ... enameZWDVW

I can't believe that no one makes that size aftermarket...it's an extremely common valve cover grommet size on Mopars.

They local auto parts store has a "HELP" grommet display, red cardboard with plastic packaging. The part# shows 42344 for a direct replacement of the Chrysler #2946079 air breather grommet. It also has a cross reference to a Dorman #495-072.

Hope this helps! :D

Both NAPA and our local independent auto parts carries them.

Ted,
Once again thanks for the help...

The ebay link ones will not work, they are for 1.25" OD hole, the valve cover is 1.5" OD

You listed that the Help #42344...interestingly enough at RockAuto.com I ordered the Dorman #42344. Maybe Dorman and Help have the same part number? I have no info on the Dorman #495-072 you listed.

But get this...

This is what I did on RockAuto.com under my car:
Dodge > 1971 > Dart > 3.7L 225 > Emission > PCV Valve Grommet
It lists the following 3 items:

DORMAN Part # 42064
PCV Valve Grommet

DORMAN Part # 42344
PCV to Air Cleaner Grommet

AIRTEX Part # 2P1007
w/1/2 in. I.D.

Those are the part numbers and descriptions. Last week I had a 'hunch' that from the picture and description, the Dorman #42344 MIGHT be the breather grommet...they just put the wrong description. In light of your info about the Help# being a direct replacement, maybe it's true!

I should know in a day or so when I recieve the grommet. This will be GREAT info if its true, everyone can then easily order stock replacement grommets for BOTH the PCV valve and breather from RockAuto!

*crosses fingers*
