I have a set of rings that came with the Venolia pistons, they are not chrome or moly but the top ring looks different then the #2. I need to do some additional homework to try to figure-out what they are.
I may buy a new set of cast iron rings just so I know what I have.

BTW...
I found a photo of the Guzzi Valiant. (under construction)

Do you know of any off the shelf ductile iron rings? (3.460 bore)

For the race engines, I like the soft cast iron rings, I can get them to seat quickly and long term life is not an issue... as long as the rings don't snap when you hit the engine with a 150 HP shot.

I agree and use the cast rings in most of my engines, which are "throwaway" motors (stock bore and stock pistons). I have broken a few rings, and pistons, on juice, but I can fix them for less then $50. I do have a couple of sets of TRW "Moly" rings on the shelf, along with some TRW pistons. One set of Total Seal ductile rings to go with the Venolia blower pistons, I got from Josh. I hope to be able to rebuild my .040 turbo 170 this year, and start on a "full boogie" race motor. Both those motors will get good parts.

It sounds like you and I are on the same program. I have 2 'broken' engines that we are patching back together, both have piston problems.

I also have enough high quality parts to build a new HP 225 from the ground-up, that is this engine.
Now if I could just locate a nice crankshaft... that would get this engine on the assembly "fast track".

BTW, I never have any luck with moly rings on spray engines, the moly gets "blown-off" the ring surface. :shock:

Thanks for that tidbit. The only moly ring motor I have run nitrous on, was my turbo motor, without the turbo. Ran about 3-400 lbs of nitrous thru it, before I got greedy and tried a 175 shot on a 170 motor. When I pull it down to replace the bad pistons. I will take a close look at the rings.

Got all the pistons and rods assembled, here is a shot of the parts:

I have to say that the TiNi pins look pretty cool:

And the coated pistons... well, they are coated. :roll:
I'm still not sure about that stuff but I have to say that I'm getting faster with appling the coatings and a little goes a long way.
This is the thrid set of pistons I have done and there is still over 1/2 a bottle of each coating left.

Is the "piston paint " being used because you are spraying the motor or did I miss the post where you discussed this material? Based on the look of the pistons there are at least two different paints/coatings that were applied to the pistons?

Yes, these pistons have two different coatings on them.
The top gets a ceramic base "thermal barrier" coating and the skirts get a graphite based anti-friction coating.

We had a pretty good discussion on the use of coatings in the Twiggy thread, starting around page #6

I have not use this stuff until recently. I most likely would have never used it but was given some to try, so onto the pistons it goes.
We will see if I can use it all up before it hardens in the bottles!

I have been looking at many 68-76 "big pilot" SL6 cranks trying to find one that will take a lot of HP. (I don't like dumping a lot of work into a "sub-standard" one for an all-out race SL6)

The good news, I found a couple cranks that don't have a bunch of deep balance drilling in the rod journal cross-section areas:

The bad news, one of the cranks is a earlier "small hub" unit and the other.... some mis-guided mechanic hack sawed off the flex plate register hub. :shock: :roll: :evil:

Time to go to "plan "B"... I found a shop that is willing to work with me to machine / rework the rear pilot holes on these cranks.
I made a repair ring that we will use to repair the "butchered" crank. The remaining pilot hole needs to be carefully machined-out and we will press-in a repair ring.

The small hub crank will get it's pilot hole opened-up to the big pilot size. (1.810) I will have to use a small hole flex plate and this crank's register hub will be thin... but it will work.

So off to the shop we go... wish us luck!

As noted in a different thread, the Guzzi engine is now installed in the chop top 62 "Rat Rod" Valiant the engine was built for.

Here is a link to the directory with some installation photos, I will post more info in a few days.

Meanwhile, I need to finishing packing the car, we leave in the morning for the ski slopes...

rear trans mount done,shifter welded in,header clearance taken care of,radiator still has a few issues,working on it,shimed left motor mount to get pan clearance,anouther 8 hrs i figure before i fire it up,100 hrs before I drive it,Mark

what motor mount(steel part) --are you using for the left side? that looks different from what i've seen on 62-66 a bodies? Car looks cool with the lowered top-- thanks for sharing the build -up. Lawrence
