hello, this is my first post. i was told to go here from moparts because they said you guys could help me better than they could. anyways, i got a 74 dart with a 225 slant six and i adjusted the valves and now it sounds like there is a miss in the exhaust or something. here is a video clip that i took: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-hcZJP1o_U

i think i may have adjusted the valves too tightly, i used a 12 on the intake and a 22 on the exhuast. i put a rubber gasket on the valve cover and if i went back in there and redid them, do you think i could reuse it?

Did you adjust them hot while the engine was running?

.012 and .022 is what I use for more seat time.

We suggest that you do this procedure while the engine is running and after it is nice and warm, 180 degrees. Turn the idle down as low as it will go and still keep running. The lower idle keeps oil from squirting everywhere and it is easier to tell when you got them dead on. The feeler gauge should slide in and out with out too much drag.

The rubber gasket is fine.

thanks guys, did you click the link and listen to the file? what i did was turn the engine over till the valves i wanted to adjust were free of load (i spun the pushrods to make sure) and adjusted them like that. is that ok? and yes, i ran the engine to operating temp before i did it.

I'm not hearing a miss or tick in your linked file — can't tell from the dark screen where we're listening here; at the back of the car or at the front — but I wonder if you might have missed the "crossover" in the middle of the engine where there are two intakes side by each. If you overlooked that, then you might've adjusted some intakes to the exhaust specs and some exhausts to the intake spec.

the video is from the rear bumper, then goes down to the tailpipe. nope, i have a chiltons manual and i followed what it said ei ei ei ie ie ie front to back

Yes, I listened to it, and it was fine, however I am with Dan on his diagnosis. You have two intakes in the center right next to each other. Be sure they are both the same. The crank is symetrical, you start with exhaust on number 1 and end with exhaust on number 6. (EI EI EI IE IE IE)

Pull off the valve cover and re-adjust the valve lash, while the engine is running at a low idle... it will not "bite" or make a big mess.

You should be able to re-use your valve cover gasket as long as it is not torn or badly smashed.
