Time to order a carb for my new motor. Question is which one?!

The build so far:
225, 0.030 over
Small block Ford inlet valves (1.72"?)
Pocket port job
230 @ 0.050" cam, 0.435" lift at valve, 109deg lobe seperation
3 speed manual
3.23:1 diff ratio
HEI ignition
Offenhauser 4BBL "shorty" manifold
local 6-2-1 Headers, 2.5" exhaust with good flowing muffler

All this is going in a '68 Valiant, should weigh about 3500lbs with me in it.

Car is going to be a weekend toy, will be pressed into occasional daily driver duties from time to time. No plans to drag race it, I'm just after a cruiser with a bit of get up and go.

I've searched this forum for 4BBL advice and concensus seems to point to the Holley 390, which is what I'm leaning towards.

Given my build specs - what 4BBL would you recommend? Have I got too much cam duration for the 390?

(btw - this engine is not replacing the EFI motor, this one is for a different car)

Not an expert but have you thought about an Edelbrock 500 cfm avs? I hear they are easy and forgiving as far as over carbing it. Maybe someone else can chime in on this one.

The Edelbrock 500 is more forgiving and easier to tune. Once tuned you can forget about it.
The Holley can be good, but requires more tinkering to dial in.
Either is fine depending on how much you want to tune.

No. I have run my 390 with 300* advertised duration and .558" gross lift. It worked fine. :shock:

You may want to search for a thread called "interesting new carburetor option" 440 magnum explains why the avs might be a good choice. Good luck with your project!

Try a 3826 or 3827 Carter carburetor. They are 400 cfm and super easy :D to tune, they are off 1965 Buick 300 engine. I redo these all the time and they are a nice carb when restored .
