For a short while, there was a guy who made aftermarket stainless steel battery trays for my model of truck. The quality was beyond outstanding (sadly, he's out of business now), and I'm investigating trying to get one made for my '74 Duster to replace the nearly kaput factory tray. My question is, would anybody else be interested in a complete stainless steel battery tray assembly (to include hold-downs and hardware)? I would assume the battery tray assemblies are identical among all A bodies, but correct me if I'm wrong.

This is all weighing on if I can get one done, how much production would be if it's successful, and how much interest there would be. I would ask that folks pay for the individual tray assembly and shipping if it pans out. I won't make any profit off of it, but just want to contribute something to the community on here.

'63-'66 uses another set
(above two groups can probably be commonized without too much difficulty)

'67+ uses yet another set

Just out of curiousity, what stainless grade are these made out of?

If 304 I'll pass, if 314/316 (acid resistant) how much is he asking?

I won't have any idea until I can do up a template and take it to a machine shop to have made. I'm hoping I can find a guy who'll laser cut and then etch each tray like the guy who made them for my truck. IIRC he used 1/8" 314 stainless sheet metal for his trays, so that's what I'll try to use. If it ends up being ungodly expensive, I won't be able to do it, but I'm hoping I can find someone on base back home who can give me a hookup.

316L would be a good alloy to use and is easier to cut/bend/form. Corrosion resistance is very good. Cost compared to 304 is more, but not much.

You guys are making me drool, with this talk about stainless steel battery trays. Now, if there is some way to convert drool into money...

Haha. Don't hold your breath for 'em though. I don't want to get everyone all excited only to find out that they're way too expensive to have done (or anything else that'd prevent a production run). I'll do up the measurements and templates to get a prototype done (my Duster's a '74, so it'll be for 67-up A bodies) during my offtime at the beginning of May, and I'll press on from there.
