Before I bought the car, my 63 Valiant was converted to mopar electronic ignition. Currently, the coil being used is a Mopar Performance one (chrome cannister). I see what appears to be replacements at Summit Racing and Ebay for about 45.95. I want to replace the current coil with another but I am finding it hard to justify the expense. Can any of you suggest another coil good enough for a street car?

I read your article and instructions. Based on what I read, I purchased an MSD Blaster Coil PN 8202 to replace the Mopar Performance Coil. A couple of items in the instructions bother me:

1. "This blaster Coil Kit is intended to be used with an MSD Ignition. If installing on a stock, points style ignition system, a 0.8 ohn ballast resistor or resistor wiring MUST be installed." I am installing it in an electronic ignition system NOT points. The present ballast resistor is a 1.2 ohm.

2. "It is recommended to mount the PN 8202 .... in an upright position." My present coil is laying on a fender. I would prefer to mount the new one in the same manner. Can I?

I've used the Accel chrome coil, but while it seems to works OK, the cases corroded very quickly on the 2 I have. I have a MSD canister-type Blaster coil in my Ford; it works fine. None of those 3 seem to work noticably any better than a new stock-type coil, as far as I could tell from just driving.
Either your stock ballast or an aftermarket ought to work fine with the new coil. One fellow I helped out ran his stock coil w/o ballast for a year, until, as he put it, the coil "blew up". Keep in mind that some ballasts (the Mopar point-type) are designed to get hot and increase resistance (0.5-2.5ohm) to save the points at low RPM, but improve high RPM operation, while others (the Mopar electronic-type) keep it constant (~1ohm) to ballast failure. Red hot wire-wound resistors tend to corrode and break easily compared to much cooler ones. You'll never probably be able to notice any difference between a 0.8 and 1.2ohm ballast. In general, less resistance=more spark, but more heat and more load on your electrical connections. The factory wiring will very likely give problems if the overall resistance on coil primary + ballast is significantly decreased.
These canister coils ought to work in any orientation, but I've noticed that the ones used in a nose-up attitude never seem to develop the leaks the sideways mounted or nose-down ones sometimes do after some years. I don't worry about it and just put in like the factory did.
