My 79 D 100 shortbed with 3.55s 3 on the tree, manual steering and brakes would get a consistent 22 on the hwy at 70 MPH. As far as the lightest truck, I'd have to say maybe a 82-83 Dodge "Miser". I see someone mentioned no bed or wooden flatbed... the flatbed my brother and I made for my 79 definitely weighed as much or more than the stock wide bed.... speaking of beds would a stepside bed weigh less than a wide (sweptside) bed?

I think the stepside might be lighter because the box is single wall, but I think the aerodynamics would be worse.

FYI,the sweptside is single wall construction also.I'm thinking it would be a toss up weight wise,maybe a few pounds who knows..ummm.Bed cover would most likely help some.Sweety can I buy another /6 in a pickup? I swear it'll get good mpg and we can use it to haul like stuff,please please?

FWIW,early sweptside beds were single wall,later,post mid '64?* were double wall IIRC.

Reed,did a bit more checking today.A friends 81 d100 has a scale weight of 4200# that's dang near 900# more than my 83 van.Both figures are factory numbers that WaGov uses for overcharging on our lic.tabs.Achille you yahoo,give me a call,got that 74 swept box laying down yonder,bring your hacksaw we'll cut it up and look for double wall

The only truck I've weighed was an '84 D150 that I had bought new.
Reg cab, short bed, 225, 904 ,8.25 (3.21), PS, PB, AC and a rear step bumper.
It came in just under 3600lbs, and a bit over when I added 15x6.5" Rallye wheels off a '77 New Yorker. This is not a under valued shipping weight, I weighed on a mechanical scale AFTER I zeroed it in.
Best hwy mpg was 18, norm was 17.

My current '84 D100 is equiped the same way except for the 833OD trans.
Mods are reg Mopar ign set at 30* plus 14* vac adv, 2.25"exh, BBD.
It is probably 3800lbs with the Class III receiver hitch and full tool box.
Best hwy mpg is 20, 19 is norm.
I think I can pull another mpg from it when I get around to installing a bung on the exh to operate my A/F recorder so I know which way to go on adjustments. Tonneau cover would help also.

Reed, any thoughs to a mini-van.

Wow! I would have thought a pickup would be lighter. I guess I will keep on vannin' then! Sounds like a shorty Dodge with a 225/overdrive, low 3 rear axle ratio, and a single barrel carb is the way to go.

I have looked at minivans too. I just haven't ever sat in one to see if I would be comfortable. I will keep them in mind though.

Short term, I might just buy a bicycle for my short trips around town.

Hmmmmmmmm. Problem is I am very attached to my 84 Ford (cosmetically worn ex-daily driver with rebuilt drivetrain) and my family likes the 89 Ford (upscale conversion van with tired drivetrain). Maybe I will refurbish the 84's interior, sell the 89, and search for a slant powered replacement.

I have thought about a motorcycle, but I am fairly certain that the courthouse guards would tackle me when I tried to go in the Employees Only entrance. I already scare everybody, even other defense attorneys, by being a 6'4" weight-lifting male with six earrings and a long braid.
