Hi, I'm new to this forum and to slant sixes. I've been playing with Flat head sixes for years but recently purchased a 64 dodge Town Wagon with a /6 under the hood. It looks to me that the /6 is a transplant from another vehicle and wondered if someone here could id the year and application for me. The number is 7225R 2 17 E
Thanks for any help in advance ! Reg in Grass Valley,CA.

That'll be a 1977 cast-crankshaft 225 passenger car engine built on February 17, 1977.

You're welcome.

7225R 2 17 E

7: 1977
225: Engine displacement
R: Passenger car engine
2 17: Production date
E: Cast crankshaft

You don't mention if this engine is equipped with a 1bbl or a 2bbl carburetor. For horsepower rating information, please see this post.

Also, has your '64 got an automatic or manual transmission?

Welcome to the board Reg. What would it take to see some photos of said Town Wagon? In the gallery section of course.

Thanks Pat and Dan. The Town Wagon has a 4 speed floor shifter w/granny low. The engine just has the 1 bbl on it.

Nice, clean, straight truck. What colour(s) you going to paint it? Looks like there's already insulation on the inside.

I'm looking in the engine bay and noticing a few things. Most significant is the dangerous, haphazard arrangement of the fuel filter...right smack above the hot exhaust manifold. Please do the fuel line mod for safety.

Yeah....the engine compartment needs lots of cleaning up. I'm going to reroute some of the wires and move that fuel filter.
Not sure about the color yet. I'm going to find a color chart for 64 Dodge trucks first and go from there. Probably a light color.
Would adapting a 2 barrel carb do anything for the performance. ie....better acceleration or gas mileage?
Thanks for the help.

Yeah the 2 bbl would increase mileage and horsepower.

That is a sweet truck. If I remember right, didn't they come from the factory with a flat head six. I think they kept the flat six in production for those and military trucks to the late 60's early 70's.

Great truck and welcome to the board

No, that was the Power Wagon that remained available with the _6 long after all other applications had switched to the \6. The Town Wagons came with \6 after 1961, but this body style, I think, was available with _6 power before 1961.

Thanks for all your help so far guys !
Here's another engine # riddle for you to solve. This engine is in my recently purchased (3 week ago) 64 Valiant V100.
#CT225 11 16 Wasn't my V100 suppose to have come with a 170c.i.?
Here's how she looks now. New paint and tires.

Here's how I found her.

CT225 11 16 is a 1966-model 225 engine made on November 16, 1965, probably at the Trenton engine plant.

The vehicle trim line (Valiant V100, V200, Signet; Dart 170, 270, GT; Lancer 170, 770, GT, etc.) had nothing to do with what engine was installed. All the engines available in A-bodies in any given year were available in all variants of the A-body. The 170 was standard equipment in all 1964 Valiants, but the 225 was optional on all of them.

Thanks Dan. So if it's a 1966 model 225 engine then it's a transplant into my 64. Is this engine rated at 140 hp then? Yahoo!
Are 2 barrel intakes and carbs readily available or am I dreaming? How about dual exhaust manifolds ? Sorry for the newbie questions but here's another one. The exhaust pipe is very small in diameter. Maybe only 1.5" in diameter. Would a larger diam. exhaust system help the engine performance any:oops:
Strange engine color scheme eh?

Correct.

Kinda-sorta. For horsepower rating information, please see this post.

Yes — there are numerous good ways (and a few bad ones) to install a 2bbl on your engine. The factory '76-'82 "Super Six" setup can be adapted to an earlier car without too much difficulty, or see Parallel-2bbl intake manfiold modification (see also this post and the photo essay link from it) for another approach particularly suitable for the '60-'66 cars with rotating-rod throttle linkage like yours.

Definitely. Dutra Duals.

If you're removing the manifolds, it's worth your while to get the good gaskets for the manifolds-to-head and the intake-to-exhaust (heat riser/hotbox) junctions.

Yes. Stock diameter is 1-7/8". You can run 2" pipes off the Dutra Duals, either "Wye" into one 2&188;" pipe and into a thoughtfully-selected muffler to avoid annoying and costly-to-resolve exhaust drone, or if you wanna make noise, duals all the way back.

If you are keeping the stock single exhaust manifold, 2¼" pipe right off it, into a thoughtfully-selected muffler per above.

Strange engine color scheme
Yep. Also looks like a previous owner fashioned a carburetor heat shield. See threads on the topic of engine colour here, here, here, and here.

Reproductions of this early Valiant valve cover decal aren't yet available, but I'm working on it and they should be ready before long.

Hang around, look in the forums, read back through the old messages, and ask questions — there are lots of improvements and upgrades you can make to your '64. Start by buying at least the FSM described in this post.
