Good day to all, working towards a 225 / 250+ hp build up for my 70 Duster street & strip. I have a A833 four speed & 3:91's in an 8.75 tru track. Looking for recommendations for converting to a small block explosion proof bell housing. I have access to an excellent fab shop with a lazer cutter, does anyone have a drawing or can offer any imput.
I'm also open to suggestions for a flywheel, clutch & pressure plate that could be a bolt in deal if possible. Welcome any & all comments.
Thanks to all
Derek

Thanks for the link Greg, you really have that car working good. What are you using for a bellhousing now? Do you havr any provision for safety? What billet fywheel did you use? Did you need to modify anything? I appreciate any help.
Thanks Derek

Derek,

Here is some of the info on the parts I run And Where i got it from. I am not sure if all of this stuff is available - But It was 2 years ago.

I run a 64-66 A Body Cast Iron Bellhousing with a safety Blanket

Blanket Info:
ALLSTAR 69010 is the part #

http://www.carshopinc.com/product_info. ... 5511/69010
http://www.go-fast-parts.com/5733501.html
http://www.allstarperformance.com/product.htm?prod=438
http://www.google.com/products?q=all+69 ... h+Products

The Clutch Pressure Plate Flywheel and Bearing I got From McLeod - The Bearing is the same as stock.

The part #'s are as follows:
Flywheel (listed for a slant six) - #464001
Pressure Plate (listed for a 3.7 liter Phord) - #360116
Disc (listed as 10" dual performance) - #260826
Bearing - #16053

McLeod can be hard to get on the phone -
http://www.mcleodind.com/
(714) 630-2764
They were bought out by B&M and I am not sure if it's easier to get thm on the phone now or not.

But the phone Process is dial number - If you get a busy singnal hang up and repeat for hours on end.

The only hing I needed to modify was build a 1/2 Rise Base for the Clutch Fork, and A little Geometry Mod to the 1964 Clutch Fork.

I just cut the end off of a 1969-up fork and welded it onto the end of the eariler one to make the geometery and other Issues work better.

Hope This Helps you out.

Greg

That's great Greg, I have an early iron bellhousing already, I'll try & get pricing today to get parts ordered. I didn't know the blankets were available for manual trans application, very helpful. How many passes to you have on this combination? How can I identify what gear ratios are in my A833? I noticed you have several, which combination works best ?
Thanks & regards
Derek

With my 4.10 Rear I found it races best with the 2.66 low gear - It also reduces the rpm Drop Between 1-2 which is nice for getting to the end of the track. The 3.09 Box produced sub 2.0 Second 60' times for me but it liked to spin the tires a bit so I got to the end of the track slower.

The OD unit is for cruising only - - If i run it at the track I can loose as much as .5 seconds due to inadequate gear ratios.

The only way I know of to chek ratios with out going in and counting teeth n the box is to mark the input and outputshafts with paint or chalk and put it in 1st gear and note the rotation relationships. You will most likley have some sort of 2.66 or 3.09 low gear in the box with a non od gear set.

OD trannys have a huge 5.1XXX" Bearing retainer that only fits with an aluminum bell housing

I swapped my od Gears into a regular 833 Case for my car.

Here is some usefuel info on the 833's
http://www.slantsix.org/articles/4-spee ... speed1.htm

The blanket is a universal fit deal it's nice I finagle it around the bellhousing for safety - I am not sure it even made for a manual - I just use it.

The Mcleod parts have been in my car for 2 years of hard racing an easy street driving and some long crusing. No problems.

Sandy I got the Idea After my Pressure plate blew up I thought I better get some safety stuff down there - Originally the cox brothers were going to fab up a Steel Slant six Bell housing for me but that sort of fell through as their sheet metal shop was slow and then there were some other issues for the brothers. So I bought a blankeee for the bell housing.

I dont want to use a 340 scatter shield although it would be a fine option for a dedicated race car or someone who does not care about factory starter location.

They would not hae even passed me for tech at Martin unless I had a blanket (which I Did).. It would have sucked to pull 500 Miles to get turned down at tech for not having a blanket.

Great information Greg, my trans is not the od version, I'll count the teeth as per you suggestion. What height are your slicks? what rpm do you cross the finish line at? Do you run a line lock? I appreciate your imput.
Thanks Derek

Derek,

My slicks are 25" tall and I do not use a line lock - I would use one if it was a dedicated race car - - But I am trying to retain that stock look. I just get the tires spinnin for a burnout then hold down both the brake and gas - It works for me.

RPM across the finish line - I am not certain on that - I believe it's between 4800-5200 I might be waay off on that _ I need to pay more attention to it when I race this year.

Greg
