Is there an overall length difference with the '66 (lever) and newer 904's?

I am looking for a /6 904 for my RWD Turismo project and there are 904s out of B-Bodies and A-Bodies out there to look at.
I just didn't want to waste a trip. :wink:
Obviously I'm looking for the shortest overall assembly.

in my reading the only ones to watch out for a the truck 904's. they have a longer end shaft section then the passanger car 904's. i would then assume nothing is different with later 904's. as long as its a passanger car 904.

In my experience all the 904s were the same length... there was a short tail and a long tail (which is the "standard" or better known) 727, though. Ive swapped 904s many times between cars and trucks without a problem(no driveshaft swaps, etc needed) but go from a 904 to a 727? Yeah. then u gotta either cut the shaft or else find a JY driveshaft to fit.

I have a pushbutton 904 in the shed that is definitely longer than the one in my '64 Valiant. I had planned to use it, but my measurements told me that it wouldn't bolt up, even if I swapped the tailshaft. Sorry, I don't have the numbers at hand.

Hey Terry,

I'm in the midst of a RWD Turismo project myself. How far along are you with yours?

Mine has the 8 3/4 hung on leaf springs (for now) and an 8 point roll bar installed. The K member has been turned backwards. Not sure how that will work...

What did you (or do you plan to) do for your front suspension set up?

Car is supposed to be at my place from OHIO this Friday.
Havent even looked at it (other than all the pix) but the swap/K member is done already. Had a spool mount 360 in it.
You got me wondering now about this flipping the K member around. That would make it a rear steer ?? I was keeping the FWD frt suspension but with 2 beefier springs up there.
Every time I look at the under hood shot I wonder where my Rear Sump truck Oil Pan will go. There's a crossmember there now??????
This Kit was designed for an A-Block Mopar not the Slant. :roll:
Rear WAS (seller kept it) an A-Body 8 3/4 on Camaro leafs. Got to find another one of THOSE now too.

The info that I posted yesterday, I am not familiar with the PB trannys or the ones with the ball and trunnion, as far as any possible different lengths, I guess the older ones could be longer, didn't they have a front AND a rear pump in the case? My experience pertains more to, say, about '68 or 69 and newer; that said I have yet to see a 904 (or the 998-999 wide ratio variants) that is any different length than any other, though I have swapped many and even rebuilt a few. That isn't to say there COULDN'T be any different just that I have not seen any.

Those were only in the 727's.

As to the tail housing lengths on a 727, I believe there were 4 different lengths.
The longest was for C & B bodies along with light duty D-Series Trucks.
Then there was the shorter tail housing for the A-Body.
Then there was a fixed yoke even shorter type that could have a drum type park brake (or Not) or Ball and Trunion flange. This was used on the Motorhomes, 400 and 500 series trucks.
The shortest (8") was used on the '64 to '70 Dodge A-Series Vans/Pickups and Jeep Cherokees with divorced Transfer case back when Chrysler first entertained picking up all of AMC on into the mid 80's.
The unique point to note here is that were even 2 of THESE 8" fixed yoke tailhousings.
One with a TOP mounting EYE cast right in for the overhead trans mounting on the '64 to '70 A-100 & A-108's.
Then, starting in '67, a rear case for the same application that had a mounting face on the top AND bottom to facilitate the A-Series trucks (with a BOLT on EYE) AND the W-Series 4WD light duty trucks, where the Trans Insulator bolted to the bottom.

I'm not a tranny expert but I'm pretty sure the 904 had a rear pump as well, through '66.

Is the car blue with black stripes? That sounds remarkably like a car I considered buying a couple years ago! :shock: I'll look through my pictures of it. If it is the same car, the guy that installed the 360 simply cut the rear section of the existing K memeber to provide oil pan clearance and moved the steering rack to the front by swapping spindles side to side. Those cars are ORIGINALLY rear steer. He apparently drove the car on the street for awhile that way.

The way my car has the whole K member flipped backwards is yet to be proven as a good method. I actually like the way the guy with the blue one kept the suspension geometry intact and just moved the rack to the front similar to the old Direct Connection Daytona V8 swap kits did. I have a scan of an article about that kit.

I'll shoot you an email with the information I have.

You are sort of correct. The 904 had a rear pump, thru the 1965 model. So if a 904 had a bolt on driveshft flange, it has a rear pump. As far as I know all 904's from 1966 and later, with the slip spline, are the same length. I also have a "long" tailshaft 904, but it is the early flange type. I do not know the year or application.

Hey Terry,

I'm not sure of the original story on it. Dennis (slantzilla) said a friend of his bought it with the 360 in it and I believe he drove it that way for a short while before pulling the drivetrain for another project.

From the pictures I have it looks like it should have enough clearance for a rear sump oil pan, but with the added length of the Slant 6 you may have to do some "creative re-engineering" of the firewall. :shock:

Please keep us informed on your progress with it! Yours will surely hit the street/track long before mine will. :roll:

That snow storm 2 Fridays ago blocked the trip up here so it STILL aint home yet. :?
Interesting note here is this car comes with an old Michigan Green "T" Title too, last transfered in 1999.
Should be an interesting project, it seems so far...
