Honestly the open headers sound and feel better than this drone at 2200 cruise. I find myself doing anything to stop the drone, like hit the gas and let off, hit the and let off, just to avoid subjecting myself to the drone.

Install a Walker/Dynomax Welded muffler in place of the one you have now. It's a straight through desgin, packed with fiberglass to absorb some sound. They flow great, do add some "hush" and have fully welded seams, so no blow-outs.

The Thrush Welded muffler is very similar, but costs $30 less. I tried the cheaper Thrush Welded muffler (also made by Walker) on my '77 Aspen after using one on my Astro DD. Has a nice deep tone, but no resonance and like most Dynomax/Walker performance mufflers it is louder when you stand on it, but easy on the ears when cruising at part throttle.

For $40 spent on one at www.rockauto.com you have nothing to lose.

I tend to agree with those that have suggested some sort of fiberglass muffler. I had a 5.0 in my younger years ( I know, I know, stop it), and tried a few different mufflers on it. The Dynomax turbos ( fiberglass packing) worked great.

My original post to you about the X pipe and two tail pipes and the little Thrush welded muffler gets you away from the big booming drone because the components are much smaller. There are no large cavities to even start the drone. My car is nearly silent at 2200 rpm at 2800 it wakes up!

At Summit Racing they are a little cheaper. I like mine allot, good value in todays world. :D

Did the dual exhaust A-bodies have a differant gas tank in them. If they didn't, installing duals in this car is a mistery to me and my exhaust guy as to how it would be done. :?

You could get tail pipes from TTI, madrel bent ready to go. No diff in tanks that I know of.

I am not sure about late As.....but the early As had no dual exhaust (even Formula S)....and no room on the passenger side by the tank.

My '72 will not allow duals. Either late A-bodies didn't come with duals, or those cars came with different fuel tanks. :shock:

The exhaust is fixed and the little drone is not to bad. I may insert a spring loaded baffle in the tip to get rid of that. The drone was coming from the Flowmaster and being ampified by the tail pipe. Drilling a few holes in the tail pipe here and there proved to increase or decrease the drone depending on where the hole was drilled and what lenght pipe was held up to it. In the end nothing reduced it to an acceptable level and I was left with a massive headache from noise and sucking in fumes. :x
Off came the Flowmaster and on went a Magnaflow. I dropped down to the 2.5" version because they only offer a full polished one in the 3" and I figured for max performance I'd be openning the cutout anyway.

to a 390CFM 4150/60

I've had three '72 Darts, all Swingers. They all had aftermarket muffler shop duals. They all had the same 16 gallon gas tank, as far as I know, the only option. There's less room on the passenger side than the driver's side, but they all fit fine (but tight). If you (or your muffler man) can't find the room, simply reposition the tank slightly to the driver's side. If it still won't fit, find someone better qualified to bend pipe, or come to Dallas (I've used three different shops for my duals).

If you need pics of my current Swinger's exhaust, or the pipes on my '67 Dart, or my brother's '67 Barracuda, all with duals, let me know. Just my $.02.
