I just pulled the head off my 63 225 to get a look at the cylinders before I ordered the engine kit for my rebuild. Either the motor was rebuilt at one time, or these motors are better than I thought. The cylinders are perfect. Not a mark on them anywhere. What little stuff that was in the cylinders is stuff that fell in when I pulled the head off. So I'm just going to pull the motor to clean it up and change the cam to one of the Erson 270's. A couple of the water jackets were clogged, so that explains the overheating problem. The car sat for awhile with just water in it before I bought it. Since I don't have to rebuild the bottom, I can afford to have the head I bought decked a bit. I just want to raise the compression a little. I want to still be able to run regular. Should I just go about .050 off the head? The exhaust manifold was broken completely if half right were you would cut it for a set of Dutra duals. Good start for the back half of a Dutra dual set-up. I tried to order the cam today, but Tom at Erson is gone until Monday. Guess I'll have to wait to order it. I guess I get lucky sometimes. Any help on the decking of the head is appreciated. A couple more questions. Does it matter if you change around the head bolts, or should they go back in the holes you took them out of? Same with the pushrods. I still have them where they originally came out, but it would be easier to just put them all in a bag together. I'll get new lifters with the cam.
Thanks,
Wylde Bill

While you have the head off the engine, get a caliper or borrow one from a buddy and get an idea of how far down the piston is in the bore at TDC... then you might want to measure your chamber volume (el cheapo method with a peice of plastic and a 60cc syringe from a pet store...)... then someone here can help you calculate your desired compression ratio vs. what to take off... sadly if nothing had been done to your block, you will give back about .039 of the .050 when you put on the fel pro comp head gasket... with those two measurements you'll know where you are starting from, and can get a better idea of where you are going (I'd hate to just lop .050 off, and find that the current compression is really just 8.5:1 and picking a hi-po cam that won't match the compression range is asking for a bit of trouble...)

Wylde Bill, Don't worry your not the only one corn-fused by this! Could someone draw us a picture! Some just mill the head. Some builds call for a zero deck height. Some folks mill head and deck. Compreshion ratios vary on what you happen to read. Don't get me wrong I have learned alot! :o Thanks!

Can I just measure the depth of the carbon on the walls of the cylinder where the piston doesn't reach, or is that how far the rings go up and the piston is higher. That's probably the case, but I just want to verify before I measure.
Thanks,
Wylde Bill

Here is a good method for establishing compression ratio.

You now owe me an ale......

I spoke to the guy at one of the local machine shops, and he quoted me $65 to shave down the head once I know how much I need to take off. He said he should be able to do it in less than a day. I don't think they're real busy right now. I'll try to find the syringe and measure the cc's when I get the head next week. I'm going to try to measure the piston depth this weekend. Thanks for the help everyone.

Hi Bill,

Although the $96 a set of ARP head studs cost might seem a lot, you will learn to enjoy the ease they afford when it comes time to put the head back on. That is a heavy piece of iron to be trying to get perfectly on so you are not slding it and the gasket around, and the studs direct it on exactly as it should be. Plus they don't stretch and if you ever want to redo a head, you won't want to be reusing your old bolts over and over. Chances are, if you "get into it" you will swap heads ever now and then.. Oh, with studs it is easy to install your Dutras on the head and the head at the same time.
