How much (if any) clearance does a cam button need? Im putting my short block together and made sure the button was not putting pressure on the cam. Cant see anything once the cover is on. Its hard to "feel"when the button is touching the cam.

Next question: once its adjusted do you LocTite it?...use a lock nut?

You'll know if you've gone too far... the timing cover will 'bulge' since it's a thin gauge of sheet metal...... when I did the one on the duster... I trial and error fit the timing cover on without gaskets and figured that when the cover and button felt 'snug' the gasket thickness would also be about the clearance to allow it to stay on track but not 'walk' too far...

If you start the engine and you hear a squeel out of the cover back it off a hair and see what happens...

Also I have not needed a lock nut as the tolerance on the welded nut and rocker adjuster bolt is very snug... but if you want insurance a lock nut would be a wise choice...

Sandy,

What kind of bolt are you using?

Is it a nylon bolt? or steel?

Either way I would add another nut so you can jam it against the nut you welded on to lock it.

Sandy,

I ran mine with just a little clearance so oil could get in there. If you're using a rocker adjusting screw the interference is built into the screw rather than the nut or rocker arm so it should stay put.

Its a slant rocker adjuster threaded into a 3/8 fine nut welded to the timing cover.

Mine is fairly loose in the nut....so I may use a half nut for a lock.

Looks like there is no super secret/obscure way I missed.......

Sandy, I tighten mine until I feel it touch the camshaft and back it off 2 flats of the adjuster. :D

You novices can figure out if it's touching th cam or not by tapping the end of the adjuster with a small hammer.

Run the ball-screw in until the cover starts to move, then back it out a 1/4 turn and lock it down.... done.

A quick test, stick a big screw driver behind one of the cam lobes and give the cam a push forward, you will feel the clearance and see the cover bulge.

an adjustable locking "button" to eliminate cam "walk" (forward) and the distributor and oil pump drive gear meshing dramas that creates. it simply physically stops the camshaft from moving forward as the ball from the adjuster touches the centre of the end of the camshaft.
not required in common old road engines IMO but race - thats a different ball game.

Thanks, that wasn't such a stupid question after all. I've never encountered said button. I feel marginally wiser.

I set mine to .005 By checking it with a screwdriver and a dial gauge before installing the oil pump - Lock nut and threadlocker too.
