So I've been hanging around w/ some hot rod types a little bit, and they are all into flathead ford engines of course. I think 248 cid (correct me if I'm wrong).

How do the hp and torque numbers compare to our 225 slant sixes? Anybody ever done the comparison?

I don't have specific numbers for you but from our hot rodding experience it takes a lot of money to make a flathead with some substantial horsepower in comparison to a Slant build.

We love the slant in our hot rod project (The Krylon Special). It will without a doubt outrun a lot of flatheads.

A good slant will run away from a good Ford flathead. Even the siamese port Chevy and GMC sixes were giving flatheads a lot of grief. A real 12 port OHV 6 cylinder like the slant is miles ahead of the flathead and much better than the three intake port Chevy and GMC sixes.

Just read an article that said most flatties were 85 horse stock. They have tons of aftermarket suppliers but the sucking sound you hear will be your wallet going dry. From what I understand it is not uncommon to drop 500 bucks on a good engine to build. I paid 50 for my 225!

FYI,later flats were 239ci ford 110 hp,merc was 256ci 125 hp that was about from 49 thru 53.Merc used bigger carbs and little different cam.If the thermostat/rad hoses were on front of heads its 49 up,if unmolested.Lincoln was even bigger but those numbers are lost,uh who am I and where am I?

My first car was a 1959 Rambler, and it had a flathead 6.
The bad news is that it had an appetite for head gaskets..
the good news is it took less than an hour to install one.

Good thread and good info! The Krylon Special rocks. Good to know that our engines are comparable to all the flat head folks.
