First off, my turn signal switch is kaput, by the time I was ready to buy one, they are no longer available. As such I have some jumpered wires to make the tail/brake lights work. The problem is that the tail lights are brighter than the brake lights. First I want to make sure that things are in the correct spot. The top light has a 2 filament bulb, low for tail, bright for stop. The center light is the reverse light. The bottom light is tail only, this is the one that is very bright. I think I have 1157 on top, and 1056 in the bottom two, but I have to pull them to make sure. Does anything stand out as the cause of the problem?

First, I'd make sure the lights are grounded properly. If they are, I'd check for swapped run/brake wires... but not knowing exactly how you wired up things, it's really impossible for me to provide much more guidance.

More info please. Model and year of your car? Almost all the turn signal switches are still available new, if you just go to the right source. It sounds like you've got the tail and brake wires reversed. 1157 is a dual-filament bulb, bright/dim. 1156 (not 1056) is a single-filament bulb, bright-only.

After getting a signal switch (thanks to the member who pm'd me). I got everything hooked up and working. The brake lights were still dim until I replaced the flasher. Now everything's OK. Well, except the indicator bulbs, I'm looking for a couple of those now.

Dan, thanks for the reply, you must have missed my year/model in my sig. You were correct, the other bulbs are 1156, not 1056. In your light bulb post, you said that a P3496 could be used in place of an 1157. What is the difference between a P3496 and a 3496? I can get an Osram/Sylvania 3496 locally is why I ask.

3496: 43/3 candlepower (bright/dim), which is a 34% increase in the bright (brake/turn) mode compared to 1157's 32/3cp output.

3497: 45cp which is a 41% increase compared to 1156's 32cp output.

Also 3496 and 3497 have a nickel-plated base so it won't corrode and dim or stick in the socket.

I don't know what Sylvania's selling these days. They used to sell 3496s and 3497s well made by Stanley in Japan, but they might've switched these two bulbs, like much of their line, to trash from China. Check the back of the package for country of origin, and also look at the markings stamped on the bulb base itself. The Chinese ones are dim and die young; not worth buying.
