i have a 1973 valiant w/ the 225/auto. i have replaced all the ball joints and tie rod ends, and the bushings look to be ok. there is a significant amount of play in the steering box itself. it is a power steering car that the previous owner had disconected the pump/hoses on. my question is what would be cheaper, getting a rebuild box, pump, and pressure side hose, or converting the car to manual steering. i would prefer manual if the cost is similar. i am on a tight budget, and i just want to get the car moving safely.

also, would it be worth the time and money to get a new hose and hook the old pump up to see if the steering improves.the steering gear was sitting in the car with the hoses cut for approx. 3 months, the car was not driven more than a couple kilometres like this.

There will be more play in the steering if the power assist is removed. If you were closer I'd offer up the pump, gearbox and hoses I have that were removed as a unit from a '75 Duster.

are you saying it would be worth hooking up the old stuff to see if it reduses the amount of slop? i know for a fact that the old hoses were only cut due to the motor being removed in haste(previous owners failed 360 swap), not due to failier.

you can also make the box a lil tighter by adjusting the the hex screw on top.
i had this prob and was about to get a new box... the hex was just about tight as it would go w/out giving memery steer. i swapped steering colums and the prob drasticly went away. typical

i would get the pressure hose and a pump and se how it is before you convert, unless yopur buildin a drag and need all the hp u can get. you might need different brackets on the pump if you get the saginaw style. i had that prob awhile ago and ended up never replacing the pump but it never really failed

got a custom hose made, hooked it up. much, much better. all she needs is a wheel alignment and she's good to go.

Not quite. We don't just randomly tighten random screws and expect anything other than random results. There are two adjustments on every steering box, and they need to be set correctly and done in the right order. See here.
