not liking the ugly super six air cleaner, i modified the "stocker" to accept the larger carb opening. simple , 6 snips, fold with pliers, round out and voila!

Thanks for this — I need to do the same. Just to be clear on the order of operations: You made six snips from the top (filter side), then pulled/folded the snipped metal upward/outward to enlarge the central hole? How many gaskets do you need to use for the air cleaner base to clear the BBD carb, choke lever, etc?

That's awesome Link. I've been thinking of this very thing for a while now. My plan was to use a hole saw to carefully bore out the inner circle and an inch or so of metal on both a 1 bbl and 2bbl air cleaner. Then just tack them into place, followed by some nice clean welds. This way you'll get a perfect (hopefully) seal on the air horn. I'll let you know how it turns out when I get around to it...hopefully soon.

Ok Ok SSD you are correct about the choke. Mine isn't hooked up as i want to do an electric choke, and clearance for the choke provision is valid. Living in southern California choke isn't a big issue, but other climates i'm not sure. Oh yea there is 2 air horn gaskets on there now.

That method worked poorly when my present air cleaner was built that way...I haven't yet decided whether it's because the idea is unworkable, or because it was done sloppily in my particular case. I am not a weldor, so I have to rely on others to follow my instructions :-\

Giving it a bit more thought, I think a slightly larger hole saw for the 2bbl inner might make for a tight lap weld. Centering would also be a bit tricky but I think I could tack it with everything assembled.

Alright, you got me motivated. I'll try and tackle it in the next couple of days. I shall keep you posted.

I adapted mine with a sawed off section of veggie can (green beans :D ). made new hold down bail out of heavy wire. Choke was operational with the homegrown adapter. Most people didn't notice it was a super six that way :twisted: .

I'm gonna try to "clearance" that choke mechanism this weekend. Not a whole lot need to make clear, (famous last words)....... :x

here's the mod I did today. I'm pretty happy with the outcome and even bored some "speed holes" in it for an open element design. It's not for everyone but hey, I like it.

These are the donor air cleaners. An '81 and up super six and a '66 one barrel.

Cut out the center of the super six and file the edges smooth. Then for what it's worth I decided to bore some holes in the bell, mostly for aesthetics but also for a free flowing filter.

A little paint and Bob's your uncle. The factory late model filter will fit perfectly but I may go with a K&N just for kicks.

Simple cut & file (no lip bending needed) on a "single" base worked for mine. Leaves rather a thin lip, but usable.
First iteration cleared my (manual) choke stuff with a special thick "washer" I made from some 1/4" rubber sheet.

However that mock-up left me with a (toad) hood bracing clearance problem so I changed the choke brackets to a lower profile design and went back to a thin factory cork "washer". The base wound up so close to the top of the carb that I had to substitute two flatter top screws than the factory's at the outside of the lid. Covers the carb so much that few folks pick up on the two barrel. Believe I may have the wing nut about as low as it can be with various factory parts. There's but one thread left unused on the top screw and I wound up shortening the tip to boot.
Plenty of intake howl (that's to my tastes as well 8) ).

I like your combination of parts but it looks like yours sits a tad taller than what I could get away with. Do I understand correctly that there's a bit more room above the carbs on the later hoods?

Yep, compared to '63-up cars, '60-'62 A-bodies with 225s have very little room to spare above the carb. You might gain some clearance with a shorter element...

I used the bottom of a super 6 cleaner...jigsawed off the excess so it is open element....added a sawn off top (prolly super6)...and Instant open element design that uses a stock filter.

The mudbogger uses a small Edelbrock cleaner with a top that interchanges with the sawn off Super 6. In the off season the Valaint gets the Edelbrock top......

It clears the hood....65s are very close as well.

I've yet to do a hood clearance test fit but looking at my currant clearance, I have lots of room. The early single pot cleaner has a real drop base so I thought there may by clearance issues with linkage bits. The later style also has locating notches to line up with the air horn. Oh, and no welding required.
