While adjusting the valves on a newly acquired 1961 170 /6 I noticed a dry and rust colored look on the outboard portion of the rocker.

(Please note: it had been sitting for several years.)

It appeared like lack of oiling.? I let it run a long time to allow oil to travel up the rocker. It seemed to produce oiling about halfway up the rocker arm itself. My visual could be misleading due to my ignorance of oiling function.
BTW, the halfway up appeared true on all eleven rockers. :D (OK, 12)

I noted plenty of oil coming through the rocker shaft to pushrods, oiling holes in rocker shaft etc. Seemed adequate, yet only halfway up the slanted upwards rocker. This made it appear dry to this slant 6 novice. It appears dry only to the rocker tip, springs and the valve guide areas.

I know ,.. water does not run uphill.

I have experience with V/8 wrenching but, this is new to me.
Question, How does the subject area get its lubrication?
Comments as well as answers welcome.

The oil passageways to the tips of the rocker arms are plugged.
If you look closely, there is a small hole right on the end of the rocker arm tip that drips oil onto the valve stem and spring.

It is common to find these passages clogged-up and my advice is do not even bother trying to clean a clogged SL6 rocker arm, most plugged ones never "come clean".

Buy a rebuilt assembly or swap-on a good used assembly.
I always test to be sure the oil passages are clear by using some carb cleaner spray. See Lower-Right Photo at this link

I have a 225 head of unknown year with adjustable rockers on it. Good condition, will the rocker assembly interchange?

Second Question: A and B: Will the entire head off a 225 interchange with a 170 Block. ?

If so what years do? Many Thanks. gl /6

Yes, all cylinder heads and parts from 1960 - 1980 mechanical cam SL6 engines will interchange between all 170, 198 & 225 engines with the only exception being the push rods, the 170 push rods are shorter.

Rocker Arm Specialists. Last set I bought were $85 plus freight and they did not want any cores back. Quality is very good, they have been on my motor on all my low 12 second passes. :D

Not a bad price. Thanks for the tip.

You mentioned 12 seconds. Is that a quarter mile pass.? If so how much vehicle weight? gl /6

The slant loves power adders and with the small bore to long stroke ratio it seems to help more than most engines.

I have unstopped some rocker arms before, but they may not have been that bad. The rocker shaft can be installed wrong and cause oiling problems also. Either upside down, or turned around. Turned around wrong will let them oil some but not right. Upside down is just a bad deal all around and they want last no time.

Thanks Rod. Yes that was helpful. Now I know the block production type and when it was produced. Answer is ===
=='s -- 2806830 225 1968-70 RG Includes 198

I saw numerous helpful engine decodes on this site. I could not find it on the other link Rob gave me.

Question: The "Stamped" numbers at the deck of block are:,.. F 225 T 11

What do the "stamped numbers tell me. So thanks in advance.

P.S. Would it likely be a hydraulic lifter engine? I did not yet pull a lifter. Looks like it may be.

The stamped 225 denotes that it is a 225, not a 170. If the rockers have adjusters on them it will not be a hydraulic cam. The rockers will not interchange with a hydraulic cam setup. There would be no oil down to the lifters. :D

On Rockerarms.com these two are mentioned.

225 1960-75 6 6-OHV Slant 6 Adjustable Rocker Assembly PL-33 $88.50

225 1975-80 6 6-OHV Slant 6 Adjustable Rocker Assembly PL-33S $88.50

Does anybody know the difference between PL-33 and PL-33S?
