hi sages- thought this would be an easy find but not so. took the dead single speaker out of the top of the dash in my 80 volare wagon. had to take off the top of the dash about 9 hidden screws. speaker is dead shot. its original equipment. measures 4 x 10 1/2 is oval and fits into the exact oval hole in the dash top. held in by two sheet metal screws on the ends. been to 4 auto audio shops , wal mart and a radio repair shop. nobody has this size. any idea on a source. dont want to saw sheet metal off the dashboard to make an aftermarket one fit. thanks bob fisher

Radioshack used to have them in the house brand speaker line but their website now shows some crazy price.

There are several hits on ebay staritng from $12 for the pair. I have a hard time believing audio shops can't get them - they are probably just too lazy to order them because its not going to make them much money. Can also try local flea markets.

'74 Sport' makes brackets to put 2 small speakers (3.5-4") into the space of a 4x10.

See

Since speakers are generally 4 ohm now, you can use the pair as a front 'stereo' if you have a modern radio, or wire them in series to match the old 8 ohm of the original radio.

My 64 uses a 6x9 speaker (also 8 ohm), but since the magnet was so small, a modern 6x9 with its huge magnet wouldn't fit (plus it was 4 ohms)

'74 Sport' didn't have the bracket for the 6x9 (although he might have one now as I sent him a diagram of the original 6x9 mounting bracket) and ended up making may own for 2 4" speakers in series.

Before I knew that '74 Sport' was making his brackets, I had done essentially the same thing using lexan and some goop to seal 'er up...

give 'er a shot! as long as you don't cut up the dash, you can always put in the 'correct' part in if you come across one down the line...

the 4" coaxial i used sounds pretty darn good with the 6x9s in the package tray of my 76 Aspen! Although it does leave an open terminal in the back of the deck I pirated from a Dodge Caravan(bolted right in!![required some wiring work though] )...
I was kinda thinking Sub?
eh-mabe not...

I found a nice 6x9 for my '64 Barracuda at AutoZone (California). The brand says "Metra Roadworks" and the model is AW-669SP.

J.C.Whitney sells a lot of old speakers. I bought some 4x10 there for a '68 Fury that weren't expensive, but the dome sticks up slightly and may require a little spacer to prevent contact with the grill.
