Starting to sound real good. Looking forward to your PICs of pistons and rods and a final, bottom-line, hard-and-fast cost figure. My build is on hold til this plays out. Right now, the only rods I have are NOS 2205554s (stock 6.7") and no pistons. Other than that, my parts stash lacks only bearings and rings, so I'm glad you guys are doing this. Thanks.

Can you send another picture or two with one showing the side of the rod and another showing the cap?

Good to hear that we are on the same page agian. The wife has OKed the piston/rod perchase. So I am working on this last casting and if it fails I'm hacking the head in three pieces and mailing it to Tom. Heck he's got one of my rod and piston already. Thats ok Tom you can keep it. So Tom do you feel like showing them the rod pic's?? Nah let'em sweat :twisted: ! I know what it looks like :shock: .

I know this may sound bad and that rod looks like a nice piece buuuut is the rod wide enough on the big end?? If Im not mistaken the slant rod is I think 1.1something something wide. That rod looks to small and not wide enough to me. Thats why I gave up looking for a rod that could be used in our case. I spent alot of time in the speed pro catalog and found no good matches. Thus the K-1 route.

To use the narrow rods you just have the crank modified to match.

The question becomes do you spend the money for rods or crank work?

6 of one, half a dozen of the other. :shock:

Are these rods ready, we are setting here in the middle of some choices and if there going to be ready soon I would like to know when and how much. I am looking at putting the finishing touch on a engine here in the next two weeks so the info and exact specs would be great. Piston pin size is something I am wandering about also. I already have some pistons and it would be nice if these rods would work with a factory pin size even if they may need a little touching up on the bushing to fit. Exact lenth ( which if I am remembering right 7.0 was desided on) would be good to know also because we need to figure out what we are going to do to the deck. If I am thinking right I might be able to destroke my crank and work these rods into what I already have. If not then pistons may be in order but I need to know when and whats going to be ready soon so we can deside on the engine we are doing right now.

I belive the estamated prices were around the 475 and up range. Tom would know best of corse. I,myself, am slacking on my end so I appoigize but the only hold up is the piston last time I spoke with Tom. So maybe in two weeks they could be ready if I get Tom the fue more things he's asked of me. Ive been working on my trans and I am tring locate a 3500 stall converter that is reasonaly priced. I'll call tom today and see what is up.

I have been watching this thread, since it started. I still cannot see what the piston has to do with the connecting rod design. Design the rod for the center to center length, big end size, and pin diameter, and rod material.
Looks to me like the C to C, has been decided, the big end to be stock slant size, and the pin size should not really be a big deal to either use a stock dia or change it for a different dia. The piston weight could be an issue in the design specs.
Someone please explain.

There is a good reason the piston design must be settled before the rod design can be complete. Take a look through this thread. You have people who want to use Toyota pistons, VW pistons, Harley pistons etc. Each of these pistons have a different wrist pin size and compression height (the distance from the top of the piston to the center of the wrist pin) and each piston would require a different rod. Everyone wants an economical set of rods but if we get into making rods as one-off, custom pieces, it will drive the cost up to where no one will be able to afford them. The only way to do this in a price range that is affordable is to make them in larger quantities.

And what Tom forgot to say is he is working on a piston/rod combo. Weisco needs my chamber profiles to check and see what they are dealing with. Those were off today and he should have them no later than tuesday next week. Everyone is so used to using 2.2 turbo piston because "They can be made to work." but now/soon we can have piston choices that can ranger fron all out race to simple street combos just a phone call away. And if i'm not mistaken Lucky13, Tom is doing them in stock piston pin sizes. If I'm wrong Tom will correct me on this but if he can do it in a different size pin and save us money then thats the way I vote.

This still make no sense to me. I thought people were useing the 2.2 and/or other "off the shelf pistons" to save money, along with the 198 rods. Wouldn't it be the best of both worlds, to have the rods made in the 198 length, with the stock slant big end, with a smaller dia pin end, with bushing. The reason for a smaller pin size, would be for weight reduction, and the availability of smaller dia "racing" pins. Then you can order any piston confuration from a piston manufacturer. Which do not have to be expensive. From what I have read, the "good" 2.2 pistons are becoming hard to find, just like the 198 rods, for a reasonable price. From what I see an "aftermarket racing piston" can be obtained for $300-$600 depending on options. If someone is going to spend the money for "aftermarket" rods, it doen't make sense to "settle" for an off the shelf piston.
