Junkyards up near you should have some Mavericks laying around.
Not many left, these have lots of iron and all the major scrap yards are just pitching the rims into the scrap bin and holding cars for 1-2 weeks then moving them along for more modern cars...the smaller yards are now closing up for fear of the big 'environmental' fee for ruining the earth with old car/truck fluids...

Even Car-Part.com says she'll have to make a trip to Portland for it...
The west isn't like it used to be, even Ceej is lucky to have 5 matching rims because I just got to the yard when they released a 1976 Volare to inventory....

I can agree on the reasons for 4 wheel discs, but I also bear in mind that Stephanie is on the college student budget... (mopar disc brake spindles and UCA's are gonna cost about $125-$150 for the set if she gets lucky to find some that aren't priced the Wildcat Auto Wrecking or All American Classics way)... along with that if she's changing that she might as well change out the 43 year old bushings under the car and get a set of better torsion bars too...)

Feature Creep... is it Halloween yet?

The Scarebird kit for 9" disc brakes is $105.. and I don't think I even have the right rims for it, so I'd be replacing those anyway..

So I save for a while and be patient - figuring since the parts don't come along every day - by the time they do, I should be able to have enough money put aside to snag the parts. I don't plan on doing this swap any time soon, I still have to recover from the whole engine thing..

While I don't have a lot of money at any one time, I can generally manage to set a little bit of money aside here and there (mmm ramen) to save up for stuff for my car - it's worth it. The patches on my clothes are not for fashion - my car comes before just about anything else.
And I plan on changing out the bushings and torsion bars around the same time anyway.. they're scary!!

Luckily, I have some friends in California who also do the car thing who can keep an eye out down there for me and snag parts til I can come visit and pick them up (or til they come up here and visit me!).

8" is the ring gear diameter. You can use Mopar BBP (5 x 4.5") rims on the Maverick axle. If you get the Granada axle, then you can get CHEAP 16 X 7.5" 2000-2004 Mustang rims with more offset (can use spacers on Mav axle too). I just bought a nice set of 4 shipped to me for $200. 225/50-16 is a nice size for that rim.

I would just do the fronts first on one weekend, then do the rear later. You can easily break up this job.

Lou

That's what I was hoping to do, I think the thing that isn't getting through my brain is how to match the rears with the fronts if I swap to discs.. I've only got 13's on my car right now. If I'm not mistaken, 14's are necessary to fit over the disc brakes in the front, and when you swap to disc the wheels become LBP.. right? Which means I'd have larger wheels in front than in back, wouldn't that throw off my spedometer a bit? Or if I find some 14" SBP rims for the back to match sizes with the front would that work?

Too much I don't know.. agh! I'm confused... :(

Yer doin ' OK.....

When you go to disc on the front you change the bolt circle from 4" bolt circle ,hard to find wheels to 4.5 bolt circle, easy to find wheels...

You also need larger wheels (14" or bigger) to clear the rotors.

This is a good idea because good tires come with larger size rims.

My next move is to Mustang 17" rims......(which are 5x4.5 bolt circle)

As an example Lou (Dart 270) just got some Mustang 16" rims for $200....Performance tires for that size are about $100ea...

I cant find performance 14" tires for any price....same goes for 13".

So.....Make a plan of what brakes , wheels and tires you want and start collecting. (people will give you large bolt pattern wheels and tires and LBP 7.25 rear axles till you can afford the cool stuff)

you wont mess up your speedo cuz you would still have the smaller wheels in the rear, so the outputshaft on the trans would still spin the same speed i.e. same at 60mph wit both setups. as with the speedo gear...

Thanks sandy. I knew I was going to have to go up in size.. I've got a lot of research to do before deciding on anything performance simply because I don't know anything about it yet.. but I'll get there, that's why I'm starting now.

Ok.. that helps. I was never sure exactly who spedo cables worked, all I knew is different sized front and rear wheels could cause the spedo to act all wonky.

Yea, the rear wheels will make a difference, but its not something that we couldnt easily measure and compensate for. I think the hardest part of the whole swap (other than finding time) is the rear axle. As DI said eariler, there arent many left, in fact, I cant honestly remember the last time I saw a Mav in the junkyard.

If I remember correctly, I think the Mustang IIs use the same rearend as the Mavs, and astonishingly enough, those end up in yards somewhat frequently (north salem auto wrecking especially) There was a II at Pick a part a few weeks ago that would have been perfect if the rear is the same as a Mav.

4 wheel disc brakes are just flat out awesome! You remember your Volvo right? It had 4 wheel disc, and the 5 volvos that I have owned, 4 of the 5 had disc all the way around, and they stop quick. How much power does a 4 cyl Volvo engine put out, like 110 bhp on a good day? So, I dont think its so much dependant on how much power the engine has, its "How fast do you want to stop" If you are like me in this regard, the right answer is "As fast as possible" and disc brakes are the best way to get you there.... not to mention I'd get another rear end in my shop if mine ever goes out.... right? .....right?.......I hope so anyways.... :? .

So lets find the parts, do the research, and document everything, so that if anyone else wants to do it, we can easily show them how!

My Volvo was awesome... sigh, RIP Silver Bullet.
And yes, you pretty much get first dibs of parts off my car.

Nope Mav's and her sister car the Merc Comet are the only one's using that particular 5 lug axle from 1971-1977...

Mustang II and Pinto/Bobcats are the other 'ford' suspension option for hot rods...

The best why to do this swap is to buy a $50 parts car. You will need a '73 to '76 A-body. Put both cars up on a jack stands. Unbolt one assemble on the parts car, replace broken, worn out parts, re-bolt that assemble onto your car. The whole process should only take a couple of days.

Very appropriate for April 1st, but not funny. I was darn lucky 2 years ago to find a disc brake parts car for $200.

Rim diameter won't screw up your speedo.... its the TIRES that go onto those rims... unless youre running on the rims ala demo derby style! in which case 13" with tires vs 14" w/o, you will be going way slower than it says you are! You can get 14" tires with the same or very close to the OD of the original 13s.

Well, her speedo is already off a little (its a 43 year old car... wonder why) so the speedo being off a little bit due to tires is probably a non-issue at this point.
