A window net is only if you don't have a driver's side window.
What??? You have to have a window. (unless you are in a rail) The net is required based on your ET. At that ET (don't recall the cut-off) a cage is required. When a cage is required then a net is required. When a net is used then bla bla bla... you get the point.

I took my road racing '66 Dart with no side windows and they let me race as I only ran mid 14s, had a full cage, 5-point harness, window net and helmet.

Well, that certainly went well didn't it?

Guy had some valid questions, and really had no need to buy a rule book to try and bracket race a street car. IF he was building a fast car, then by all means get one.

Most of the tracks I've been to whether NHRA, IHRA, or outlaw would not even check anything other than looking for a puke tank and a seat belt.

My junk is teched for 11:50/135mph by the NHRA and it has no cage, harnesses, or a freaking window net which by the way, is not required by cage, but by ET. No side glass is usually up to the discretion of the track tech crew, but I'm pretty sure the kid had windows anyway.

Your belts and helmet do not have to be up to date UNLESS you are required to have them for the ET you will run.

For a basic street car with minor modifications all you really need are: a catch tank on the radiator of at least 1 pint capacity, a stock type battery hold down if the battery is in the stock location, all lug nuts in place, no more than 12" of rubber fuel line in the system, (this means underhood, they never check back by the tank on a slow car) windshield free of cracks in driver's line of vision, seat belt, neutral safety switch for operation, and some places will check brake pedal travel. That will get you in at the majority of tracks in the country.

Hell, that will get you in at RT66 and they have about the toughest tech I have ever been through. :D

Here at Orlando Speed World the tech guy simply looked for a spot on the glass to write my number.

Hell, When I went down to Bradenton, they didn't even do that. I went in the office, filled out a card, they gave me a number, I put it on myself. Track people never even went near the car.

If I where a tech inspector and saw your car from a distance, I say to myself "I better have a look at this one. Don't want anyone to get hurt tonight" :P :P

Closure:

Talked to the tech guy last night, real nice guy. He was real happy to help me out and even offered me a chance to meet him for some pre-opening track testing on Wenesday night.

Anyway, he asked a bunch of questions about my car. Like have I modified it at all, if I have a overflow, all my lug nuts, seat belts, all my glass is there, no windshield cracks, good brakes and tires, and so on. He said that as long as I had a Michigan drivers license and no felony warrants, I was good. The warrants thing is a joke. He said that when I come for tech inspection, he'll take a real quick look, but I should be good.

Thanks for everyones serious contributions. Good luck with the site.

I am a little surprised and disapointed in your responce. I figured that you would want to pass the rules on to our fellow slanter, not what you have gotten away with.

"NHRA General Regulation 7:8
Windshield, Windows
Stock bodied vehicles: Mandatory, must be in good condition and free from cracks. May be replaced with shatterproof material, 1/8" minimum thickness..."

NHRA General Regulation 6:3
Window Net
Mandatory in all full-bodied cars required by the rules to have a roll-cage."

So as you can see, when you are fast enough to be required to have a roll-cage, then you must use a window net. AND all the glass IS required. Just because you got away with getting around the rules doesn't make it right!

All of these rules are gated by ET. Dennis' car runs less than the Viper Rule ET. This means he can run without this equipment.
