In my '78 half ton I'm getting a fair amount of milky crud on the inside of the valve cover. PCV has good vacuum, valve is new. Nothing mixed in the oil, and no bubbles in the radiator. Just changed the oil, and no concentrations of water, or mixed coolant/oil. I started running a 195 thermostat this winter as this truck sees limited use year round, and even less during the winter. Are these occasional 20-30 minute drives that I occasionally do on nice days during the winter causing this problem? I don't remember having this problem last summer taking it to shows a distance away. Thanks for any input. Mike

Short hops are always killer. Hope it's not a crack in the block or head gasket leak.
How hot does it get inside the cab? If it heats you out of the cab I would take it on a little longer trip once a month.

Sounds like the engine is still running cold. I would double check the thermostat. The last slant I had that did this had a thermostat that didn't close completely. A new thermostat cured it.

Setting a lot in the winter will draw moisture in the engine. Try starting it and letting it run atleast once a week. Small leaks with the head gaskets can also cause this but you will just have to keep a eye on it to see if it still does it with this warmer weather. A 20-30 minute trip is plenty good to heat the oil up and evap any moisture as long as the engine is getting warm enough. But letting it set for weeks at a time will draw moisture so it needs to be run more. Even if you dont drive it, letting it idle long enough till it has good heat coming out of the heater will help.


As far as finding out if it has a head gasket or other leak problems you will just have to clean it out, drive it regular and see if the problem is still there. If it goes away you know it was just drawing moisture.


You might want to make sure the PVC system is working right also, even though it has vacuum that does not mean its drawing air through the engine.

Remove the breather at the other end of the valve cover, block the hole off with your hand and let the engine idle for a little. With the engine still running remove your hand with your ear down close to the hole and liston for air rushing into the valve cover (when you remove your hand) to know if it was building vacuum in the engine. This will tell you if the PVC system is really drawing right. Sometimes the valve cover baffles can be stopped up and even tho you have vacuum at the valve its not really drawing through the valve cover. This test will anwser that for you.

Bad rings will also do that.

I had a slant that had TONS of blow by but didnt burn a drop of oil.

Thanks folks for the responses. I'll check to see what kind of draw it has at the filter intake. I was going to pull the cover to go over the valves so I'll clean it up and see what happens. I do have a new 195 thermo in there, and according to the temp guage it is heating up and the heater is throwing good hot air. There was a discussion on another thread awhile ago about coolant and oil temps not being the same, and just because you had operating temp showing the oil could still be too cool to allow vaporizing and removal of the moisture. She's got 125-130 on each cyl, and the head was mag'd before it was reworked. Hopefully she's just wicking in moisture. Thanks again. Mike

With the price of gas these days seems a bummer to just let it idle up to temp every once in awhile.You might consider hanging a drop light under the hood or even a heat lamp if you're careful.Just a bit of heat and maybe a blankie over the motor will keep it warm and snugglie :wink:
