I'm new to the forum and can't bellieve I struggled so long without it.
Anysuggestions of why the temp + fuel guages are not functioning on my '71 Dart ? I've checked all wires in engine leading to bulkhead connectors- all OK. Attemptiing to remove instrument cluster to check back has led to much frustration and no success yet. Could problem be NOT behind inst. cluster and save me more skinnned knuckles? Thanks.

The usual suspects for this are the instrument voltage regulator and panel grounding.

HERE is a solid-state upgrade. I've done a version of this on my '64, and it works just fine.

There are some variations in placement and wiring.

Growing older is unavoidable but growing up is strictly optional.

Has anyone done the swap for the later regulator as described in the article on this forum? My dad, also a MoPar man, has a cluster from a 73 duster that has a working regulator on it, so he's sending me the regulator and I'm gonna try it. Any suggestions/helpful hints?

I just went through this drill removing a gage cluster on my 67' Dart to repair some over current damage. You will have to drop the steering wheel down by unbolting it from the dash (three bolts), and the floor (three blots). The cluster will come right out once the wheel is out of the way.

However, if you know the location of the regulator, you should be able to reach up behind the cluster with out disassembling anything and swap it out. The condenser pigtail mates with the center leg of the regulator.

Perhaps it would be wise to remove the cluster to inspect it for heat damage, and cleaning & polishing of the copper contacts.

I'm am considering converting to a solid state regulator, as it out puts a much more constant voltage with out electrical noise that can bother the radio.
