I did a test installation of an original am/fm radio yesterday. I plugged in the power, the antenna, and the speaker, and then I turned the key on auxillary. The radio played fine on am. All stations came in loud and clear. Then I switched the knob to fm. No sound from any location on the dial. What could be the problem?

I called several radio/tv repairmen in the area. Either they don't work on radios or they claim a transistor is probably bad and they can't get parts for radios that old (1974 Dart). Are they telling me the truth? Can a novice like me repair the radio? I have taken these radios apart in years past. I know what the inside looks like. What test equipment do I need?

Or would I be better off sending it to someone to repair?

Make sure that the switch for AM-FM band isn't simply corroded and not making contact. Flip it back and forth a few times.

Aside from that, most of the parts are still available, if you look around.
But unless you are familiar with troubleshooting FM tuners (and possess a signal generator and a scope), you're probably better off either looking for another radio or sending this one for repair.

I got Sams manuals for a couple of old Mopar radios from http://www.agtannenbaum.com/ and was very pleased with them. Replacement capacitors, resistors, and transistors aren't too hard to find - you don't need an exact replacment, just something close, but the impedence matching transformer is hard. Since your AM works, that part is fine and it is probably something fairly simple. Don't overlook the possiblity that the AM/FM switch is simply bad.

I would double check for shorts in the antenna side before I took anything apart, however, when I've seen that the AM didn't work and the FM did.
