Here are some general ring selection guidelines:

The cast iron ring is the "budget" ring set, these break in well under general use. There is also a ductile iron ring set that is used with HD & turbo engines, these are a good upgrade for a performance street engine.

Next comes the "Moly" coated rings. These are a better quality and have longer life and faster break-in. The bore hone finish needs to be finer for a Moly ring.

Chrome is typically for racing where you will not give the engine any real break-in time. Bore finish is ulta-fine and a chrome ring is meant to run hard right off the bat. Chrome rings are not good for general street use just because they will not be run hard enough to get seated.
