No matter what level of performance you shoot for, your exhaust system is DONE. That's one thing you won't have to worry about for a long, long time. Looks good and a good investment.

When I bought my Valiant it had a fairly new looking exhaust system, but it looks like it belongs on a 1600 cc car.

I would like to start rebuilding my new engine asap. My thoughts for the project are as follows .60 over, cam, head milled .100, and either super six or small 4brl intake. Does that sound like a good plan and is there anything i missed?

75CusomDart, Thanks for the dual exhaust shots. Some guys claim that it is impossible to do with out moving the gas tank.
That's what MY exhaust shop said, too. Nice work!

We want to help! The problem is, we need very detailed info on how you intend to drive the car and what (exactly) you want to accomplish. Not in terms of parts you think you might want to install, but in terms of changes to how the car performs (goes, steers, stops, heats, cools, etc.).

ok, more than happy to help people spend money. The cam you want is around 270 duration and .46 lift. Isky has something along the lines of that, or you can take it to a local cam grinder. I never cared to much for my Super Six setup (though I hope Stephanie does) so my choice would be to skip right to the 4 barrel if you can afford it. Shaving your head is good, don't forget about valves. Bigger valves can help, though I would only step up to the 1.77/1.4 if you can find them. No new pushrods for the .1 head shave, the rocker arms take care of that. Last, take a manifold gasket and bolt it onto your head and use it as a template and "port" the head to match. I shrugged this off the first time, but once you put the gasket up to it you'll be surprised how much your choking your engine. For the exahust you can focus on the short radius and the bowl area. This should put you into a real nice engine for a grand, you can't even touch a stroker crank for that much.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I would like to build a mild street engine around 130-150 whp with a $1200-1500 budget. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks Cory

Find a good, serviceable (under .010 of bore wear) 225 short block and install a "ring & bearing" kit ($50 to 75.00) into it along with an Erson RDP cam. ($150) You may need a new timing chain set ($30 to 40.00) and a new (or rebuilt) oil pump is recomended.
Degree the cam.

Spend the remaining money on a ported cylinder head with oversize valves, milled .100 for increased compression.
If you measure your piston deck and your head's cc volume, you can do the math and adjust the amount of milling so you can run the car on regular 87 pump gas.

Would this get me into my 130-150 whp range. What could i expext from a .30 over bore, with a super six, the erson cam and the new head work?

The mods Doc has suggested should get you close. One thing not mentioned was the air/fuel side of the equation. If if you have the stock 1bbl carburetor it will limit what you can get out of the car. One of the best things you can do is swap over to a 2bbl or small 4bbl setup. You should notice a significant performance benefit and some people report fuel mileage increases as well.

You may or may not need new pushrods when you mill the head. The only way to know for sure is to reassemble everything and see where they line up. If you need them then they are easily obtainable.

Olds,

Just sent you a PM for my engine build and tuning instructions. It is also listed under "Engine Builds". If this is going in a van, bus or truck, you may want to add a dual roller timing chain.

Doc has built my torque/mileage engine combo and says I should be at 160 HP.
Quote:
A. Ted's engine HP is limited by the 1920 1 barrel carburetor. Adding a Super Six 2 bbl system would likely add another 20 HP.

I will send you a PM with the build sheet.

Actually with this build which I would say is pretty common, I got about 190-200 crank horses. I run a Jacobs igintion now, and EFI, but I'm not that far away from your goals. I wasn't even as good at port work as I am now, if you want some ideas you can go under Slixer's Gallery under "Buster the Duster". However, not only is this an all around good rebuild to do, but combo'd with this engine, horsepower is pretty insignficant. Why? My engine pushes from 700rpm to 3500 and is pretty much dead in the water, so obviously the torque is outragous, which is what the slant six has going for it.

Hey guys I picked up my parts car yesturday in De and when I brought it home i found that has a supersix intake. But it doesn't have a carb, and I was wondering how to tell the kickdown linkage apart. I will get some pics put on later today. Thanks Cory

What carbs can I use on a super six manifold? Has anyone installed a dodge dakota rear axle in a dart?

Well, I don't know if anyone has installed that rear axle, but first off the one's I measured were way to long and they have a 6 lug bolt pattern. My suggestion would be the ford 8.8 you can search for them in the Trans and Rearend section. Or, unless you ever plan something along the lines of more than 350hp a 8 1/4 rear should be fine. You can steal them out of lot's of mopars and get aftermarket center sections.
Other guys can help with the carb choices (I swore off carbs forever after discovering Megasquirt), personally I would jump straight to the 4 barrel if you plan on doing any sort of ultimate performance. Though some would argue that point as well, but a 390cfm is a nice little carb.
