we have a 1985 dodge ram 100 slant six, 4 speed overdrive...is there a DEEP oil pan avaible that will bolt up with NO mods? and a high output oil pump...this truck runs excellent but I always like more oil/pressure...thanks

There is no deep oil pan available for the slant. You must make your own. As for a high voulumm oil pump, the aftermarklet stock replacement pump is a high volumm pump, compared to the factory original pump. Aftermarket "high volumm" pumps are available, but are not normally needed or recommended.

Excess oil pressure and extra pump load have been linked to oil pump / cam drive gear failures.

sure make sense to me...man I run 20-50 wt oil cause i've got 159K miles...maybe I should be running 10-30 wt..any thoughts..

has anyone ever run an auxiliary eletric pump, comming off the side of the oil pan and dumping trough the valve cover directly to the rear of the rocker shaft...say a SS braided line , with a pressure adj. valve inline ?

this would insure more pressure @ the rocker arm shaft, that is adjustable, but no load on the mechanical pump drive gears..and it would be fairly easy to try..

I recently rebuilt my motor and after 20,000 of break in I switched to 5-30W Mobil 1 per SL6 Dan's recommendation. It quieted the valve train right down and have nearly 50 pounds oil pressure. Recently, I switched to 0-30W Mobil 1 and have 49 pounds pressure at cruise! The top end gets plenty of oil! and stays reasonably quiet even with a loose lash setting of .012 and .022. I used to run the NAPA 1515 filter but since have switched to the 1806 filter. Start ups are dead quiet in terms of oil pressure and I get good 50 pounds pressure right off the bat, much quicker than the 1515..

A good start before you tackle anything more would be to simply change to the better quality, larger extra capacity wix 51515 or napa gold 1515 oil filter. Besides oil grade considerations, this one add-on alone, is more than enough upgrade for most slants running stock.

I thought the stock, rear-sump truck/van pans hold an extra quart. Maybe I'm wrong on that one (won't be the first time).

Red,good question.I've got two /6 vans an 80 that takes 5qrts and a 83 that takes 6qrts.Both pert much same same with exception of one solid lifter and one hyd lifter,go figure :?

As far as oil capacity; I have owned and worked on several mid 70s thru present Dodge trucks and vans. As far as SB V8s and /6s, I seem to recall that every one I worked on <1988 was a 6 quart capacity. 88> went to 5 qts including filter. In fact I wish I knew where some of my old factory service bulletins went; I could swear that I remember one pertaining to the 1 qt reduction in '88> models (which would exclude the /6 in U.S. applications anyway). I know for a fact, that my 79 D 100 and my buddys 87 D 150, both /6s, took 6 qts with filter. I dropped an older (as in earlier 70s) /6 into my 79 and it was a 6 qt motor as well. As far as oil weight/grade I have had good luck (not gonna get into "good for/bad for" the motor), with 10W40 from a known name brand source (most usually I get valvoline; occasionally Pennzoil when I find it on sale) Still to this day I run 10W40 in everything I have, year round. Though, everything I own now or have ever owned have been timing CHAIN driven cam, OHV type engines. These days that includes 2 Mopar inline 6s (the Jeep 4.0L variety)

Yes, there are some slant six truck oil pans that are 6 qt. I do not know what year/model. I made an asumption (mistake), that USAJon was inquireing about a non factory deep pan, since he had a truck.

An oil cooler does not at capacity. It actually requires more capacity, flow and pressure, from the pump. The engine will see less oil unless this is addressed. A cooler is only needed it the oil is getting too hot, I cannot even imagine this being a problem on an average slant ( or v-8 for that matter). If it is, the oil can just be changed more often, or a synthetic used.

Plenty of much larger engines live in heavy duty service with the same oil capacity the slant has.

I towed last week a steel frame /duel wheel /wood plank flooring car trailer with a 3600 lb car and she was running warmer then I like.. 200 miles..I use my slant six..did not put in overdrive !
