Sorry about the double post, but there is not much action going on in the "other" section, and this is really anoying. Here we go:

It's only when I turn right and it comes from the steering wheel. I have a 70 Duster with a three gear autmatic with the shift lever on the tree. it sounds like it comes from somwhere around the lever or just under the horn switch.

Could it be a bearing or something. Not a noise when i turn left, and the wheel is smooth.

Also, if I turn fully to the left and then begin to turn right, the noise apears just after the wheels turn over to the right.

Anyone who's had this problem?

The bearing under the steering wheel may be going, or just dry. Funny that it would only make noise in 1 direction. Could it be the canceling hardware the turn signals? Just guessing. Mike

Sounds like the little roller for the horn contact, my 75 duster did it and so does my 73, but the 73 only does it in one direction ( can't remember which ) after see sawing the wheel through the S's in the local corporate park. A little dab of grease on a q-tip on the wheel pin and some dielectric grease should silence the squeaky contact

Mine used to do it to. There is a special grease for electrical contacts that will eliminate the sound. Hardware stores sell it. When I rebuilt mine it came with a small tube of the grease. It is basically clear like silicone.

Thanks for the help guys. here's the thing, I noticed that if I put it in second or first gear it dissapears. It's only in drive, reverse & neutral. This leads me to think that it has something to do with the shift lever right?

The noise is that high pitch metal on metal sound.

Trebor, Does your gear shifter move when you saw the wheel back and forth? even ever so slightly? Has the column been "moved" or removed? you might have some clearance issues inside the column.
If you have kids, tell them to sit in the driver seat and not turn the steering wheel... 2 seconds later when they start spinning that thing :) start looking for the squeak. could also be the shifter tube rubbing on the steering shaft... not a fun hunt..

HAHA, no kids yet though. But yes, the lever does move a little bit on a right turn. I have not myself removed the column, but I guess someone did a poor job before. So I need to take it apart and fix clearing problems you think?

You might not have to take it all of the way apart to find the problem. That being said, squeaks, rattles, chatters can be a real bear to pinpoint, but at least you know how to reproduce the problem.

Are you wanting to rebuild the column or just fix the noise?

I'm glad you said fix the noise..
I would:
gather up a 1/2, 7/16 and a steering wheel puller and start taking it apart until the noise quit ( with a squeak check after each bolt is removed ) or until I found it.

if you are looking to rebuild here is a good article to let you know what you are getting into

I used to have a strange "chatter" in my column and it turned out to be that the column was sitting too far toward the firewall and chattering against the lower dash cover. And I had to do the hunting with the car running while in gear.

I'd be happy to just get rid of the noise. I'll see if I have the time this weekend to take it apart, got me a steering wheel puller today. Thanks for the help!

wheel puller is always a great addition to the toolbox..
when I was 16 and swapped the wheel on my 75 I figured "how hard could it be" so I removed the center bolt and when it wouldn't come off I braced my feet against the floor, wrapped my arms around the wheel and pushed with my legs......................2 or 3 or 30 minutes later ( couldn't really tell how long I was out) when I regained consciousness I realized the flaw in my judgment. Apparently the wheel had come off and, due to the force and lack of anything to stop it from flying off into the wild blue yonder, had smashed me in the face. I awoke leaning out of the driver door with the steering wheel about 5 feet outside of the car and my nose bleeding.....That was the day I learned the true importance of the "use the right tool for the right job" lesson.... It's amazing that I ever survived being young and stupid.

your welcome for the help, just be sure to post a follow-up with the cause.

Mine did this and the little piece of plastic hardware that cancels the signal lights had broken and got down in between things. It sounded just like a piece of metal rubbing and would do it in some gears and not in others. You could see the collar of the column move around when I would shift the gears so in one direction it get the piece stuck in harder and would squeak and the other way it would not. I also was able to tighten the collar up on the column and it didnt move around anymore.

When it was like this the signals would not cancel out when returning from a curve and I had to replace it also. They had them in the help section at one of the auto parts stores for about $15.00.
