Dear All,

I want to get more hp from my slant6. From the threads I read its very clear that below are obligatory:

1. double barrel carb
2. Headers
3. bigger valves
4. performance cam
5. Higher compression.

For the last one, I know that the head can be machined up to 0.1" but is it enough? its claimed that comp ratio is raised from 8.4:1 to 9.2:1. Is it ok? or are there high compression pistons for performance upgrades?

Thank you for your interest

By milling the head and block .100" you can get your compression over 10-1 easy enough.

wow! :) impressive.... and stock rods can handle that? If I put high lift cam do you think it will be too hard for the components? there are many varieties for 225, some 105 hp some 145 hp. I think its because of different cams is it? thnx

105 -145 HP.

Probably due to the change from SAE gross HP ratings to SAE net HP ratings which happened around 1972, I believe. Also the post 1972 engines added more pollution controls. Not sure about the slant in particular but most engines of the era got lower compression ratio's and advanced cam timing (lower rpm response). Most of the controls were mechanical and iffy at best. Then came lead free fuel and catalytic converters and the hot rod world, as we knew it, came to a close.

And then came along computerized fuel injection and by 1984 the performance game was on again.
