Anyone have an idea as to what the most economical way would be to ship four tires?

Every time I've needed a set of tires in the last five or six years, I've looked into the "buy online and have them shipped" option, and it's never made sense in terms of money, time, or hassle to do it that way rather than finding what I want locally. So I would say the most economical way to ship tires...

...is not to ship them at all.

Consider calling a local tire retailer. If your looking for, something in a Goodyear for example, go to the local/specific franchiser. Most dedicated dealers will also offer vintage and racing tires on special order, so they are quite accustomed to recieving shippments on a daily/weekly basis, perhaps, at no extra cost to you.

I've got a local shop that mounts and balances new tires for $12 per tire, charges no disposal fees, and accepts shipments from TireRack. Nobody locally comes CLOSE to that price for quality tires — there's only the inconvenience of the process as a downside.

If you can find a local shop that will do this cheaply, I'd recommend it.

BTW, was that your question? We all kinda assumed you were talking about buying tires new, but then they'd take care of the shipping anyway, and you wouldn't have much choice I would think...

I have recently shipped and received tire/wheel combos through USPS. For a combo that weighs about 40# the shipping costs were about $25. It should be cheaper for just tires.

All you have to do is cut some cardboard the size of the tire and then tape it to both sides of the tire. The tire doesn't have to be fully enclosed by the cardboard.

Thanks to all who replied. It would seem someone was attempting to run a scam. I have four 13" tires mounted on 5 on 4 rims for sale on Craigs List for $80.00 (tires practically new). A prospective buyer emailed me asking if the tires were available. He was from PA. I responded affirmative. He then asked if I would be willing to ship to PA, claiming the tires were hard to find in his area. This set off warning bells. I emailed him back telling him the cost of removing the rims alone was at least $10 per tire and when you couple that with shipping costs, he was much better off looking around locally. I found it humorous that he was intending to use the tires on his Corvair.
