Will a 727 trans fit into a 1963 Valiant without major mods?

Will it work with the pushbutton set-up?

Is anything special required to mate a post 1967 /6 to it?

A 727 will not fit into a '63 Valiant without floor pan and crossmember modifications. A '62-'64 727 would work with the pushbutton shifter, but there are no such transmissions with the slant-6 bellhousing pattern. The '68-up slant-6 engines can easily be made to work correctly in front of a '67-down transmission.

Ummm...what are you trying to accomplish here? What do you need a heavier 727 for in your '63? The 904 is plenty strong enough for even a considerably beefed up slant-6 engine, it's lighter, and it fits without problems...

Thanks for the reply, Dan. I went back and searched for some info off the site. I see that the 904 is pretty strong itself and lighter than the 727. The reason I was asking is because someone has a 1970 /6 for sale with a 727 (so they say) with some high performance stuff on it. They removed it to replace the /6 with a 360 V8. I thought it might be an opportunity to have an iron block around in case my aluminum block ever fails me or I wanted to to the hi-po route.

So what I'm hearing is that the 727 has no value to me and I would just have to swap my '63 crank for the post 1968 crank to retrofit the later engine to my '63 904.

The "727" the guy thinks he has is almost certainly in fact a 904. Take a look at the shape of the trans pan. If it's basically square with one corner cut off, it's a 904. If it's basically square with a bulged-out corner, it's a 727. The later engine would work fine with your '63 transmission by simply adding a 1/8" spacer ring between the early small-nose torque converter and the latrer large crank counterbore. The ring can be had from Pat Blais, tflitepatty@verizon.net .

I went to look at this engine/trans and it is, in fact, a 727 transmission. i don't need the 727 and I wouldn't want to cut up my floor pan to accomodate it.

I guess my next question would be - Would the slant six in front of this 727 trans bolt right up to my 904 trans (assuming I had the spacer plate you mentioned)?

Could this engine/trans combo have come stock in the car (a 1970 Duster) or could it be from a truck or taxi?


The seller doesn't know what's inside the engine but drove the car with the /6 before he swapped it all to 360 V8 stuff. It does have a Clifford 4 bbl manifold with 2 bbl adapter and a Holley 2 bbl. carb. It has spilt exhaust headers and a 2 1/4" exhaust all the way back to the super turbo mufflers. He said the engine wasn't "rumpy" at idle and ran good. Plus all the /6 drivetrain, an A/C compressor, evaporator, condenser comes with this deal. I'm thinking about it.

H'mm. But a slant-6 727 might be worth snagging if the deal's right, it comes with enough other stuff you can use, and you live somewhere central enough that it might not be too big a hassle to sell to someone who wants it.

Would be very unlikely but not impossible that it came in the Duster. Most of the 727s behind slants were in trucks, vans, and taxicabs.
