Touche' on my sidebar note--I spent the day with lawyers deciding on whether we should litigate on a coporate issue--nasty crowd.


I got the distributor kit from these guys:

They do make a claim about a "high performance advance curve" in general, but the Slant distributors are rebuilds. When I ordered mine they said the curve was "appropriate for general use"--whatever that means.

If I understand this distributor stuff right the 9R mechanical advance governor allows for 18 degrees of advance, and the 15R allows for 30 degrees, is that correct? It appears that the term used frequently is "in the plate."

If my previous statement is correct the use of the 9R "plate" is anything but performance, which explains a few things in my truck--and I thought I was getting pummeled by the Weber jetting... The unlabeled vacuum can in the rebuilt unit isn't exactly helpful--aside from trying it on the vehicle or on a distributor machine is there a easy way to figure out what it is? I imagine you measure the stroke on the thing, but from where to where? The university that I sometimes teach at has every groovy measurement device know to man--but HOW to measure the mechancial advance can as relates to the 8.5, etc numbering is what I wonder about.

I find your posts incredibly useful by the way--how you acquired such arcane knowledge on Slant Sixes and MOPARs needs to be explained sometime. I remember the days BEFORE the on-line world, good knowledge was hard to come by and hard earned...

I wonder if this distributor stuff is worthy of becoming an article here...

Yumpin' yiminy...Jim's gets $270 for a kit put together with a remanufactured distributor and a questionable orange box?!! Unless he includes a Hershey bar made out of gold, that's over twice too costly, considering this and this, both of which involve the desireable (good curve) '76 distributor. This may be one of the reasons why Jim's has a very unsavoury reputation, see e.g. here , with many similar opinions readily had on other boards (Moparts, etc.).

I don't intend to point and chuckle because you bought there. Rather, I mean to say it may benefit you to look (and ask) about your intended vendor next time.

So noted--all purchased BEFORE I found this site. However, I viewed it as a reasonable price given an analysis of time=money. In other words, compared to wandering around a junk yard looking for something I didn't know much about at the time it made good sense.

Fords, Chevys, Land Rovers--no problem--I had zero experience with Mopars at the time. My experience with Rovers probably immunized me to paying $$ for parts. My hourly pay scale indicates I could pay for a packaged kit and be much better off than prowling a junkyard. I dig through junkyards because it is FUN--if I "billed" myself for the time it usually ends up as a loose when compared to paying someone else to provide the proper part.

I will read your post about Jim and see what you have to say about him...
