Deka's another very old-line battery company (like Exide). Been around for years.

For conventional batteries, I have not had any trouble with interstates.

I have them in my own cars, in our heavy trucks, fork lifts and electric carts at work.

I live at about 5000 feet elevation, so it is below 20 in the morning often enough, and the cars see the 100 plus heat of the San Fernando valley as well. I replaced the one in my daily driver at 4 years even though it was working fine just to avoid any problems. Another in my wifes car is coming up on 4 with no trouble, I'll likely change that in the fall. The one in the dart is two and has sat as long as six months without a charge, but started right up. These are all the megatron versions. These are conventional, non sealed batteries, but I have never had to add water more than once in their life span.

We have the same kind luck with them at work. If you are in the market for a big, heavy battery, the group 31 "workaholic" truck batteries will do it for you.

I would keep in mind that a starting battery will have more cranking amps than a deep cycle battery of the same size. Which to use really depends on your needs.

Nice sealed batteries are made by Odyssey. Last a long time and are light and maint free. I have a MJ925 in my '64 and a really small MJ680 in Project V. You can go to the 1200 if worried about size. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Can order online.

Otherwise, I get Interstate batteries locally.

I put a lawn tractor battery and a Denso mini starter in my otherwise stock '67 Valiant. Works fine and saves weight. Still only turns mid 19s in the 1/4 though!

I have a OE mini starter waiting to go into the dart. I have been wondering just how small a battery I can get away with (you should see the pretend battery in my new Honda). How does it crank with a small battery, and just how small did you go?

I have not really tried to find any specs, but other PM starters I have used only had about half the current draw of the original starter and were stronger. If you aren't into leaving the lights on, the starter used could be a major factor in what battery is needed.

Our Dart as it sits is fitted to my time tested battery philosophy, which is use the biggest one that fits. With the newer starters it might be time to re-think this.

It's a standard size lawn tractor battery like you'd find on the shelf at K-Mart or hundreds of other retailers. The battery has rectangular posts with through holes so I had to use different ends on the battery cable, but since I needed a new + cable I just got one with eyelets on both ends. I just changed the terminal on the ground cable. With the mini-starter it spins over just fine and doesn't sound labored at all. The Denso starter isn't Permanent magnet, but it is a lot more efficient than the old Chrysler starter. It appears I don't have a picture of the little battery, but I could take one this evening when I'm home. PM me if you'd like a picture.
