Fellow Slanters,

I realize this is short notice, but I'll be running the '64 Dart with the Cobra Mustang Club at Virginia International Raceway (VIRclub.com) for 3 days - 5/30 - 6/1. We will run Full Course (3.3mi) for Friday, and South Course (1.8 mi) Sat/Sun.

Car is tuned up with new tie rods and alignment, new Hankook Ventus z212 tires, and freshly bled brakes.

I'll be a bit outgunned on the Full Course (3 long straights), but should be able eat up the Mustangs on the tighter South Course. This is a "track event" with possibly some time trials. Mostly just fun driving the car!

I'm sure there will opportunities for ride alongs, at least during lunchtime, likely at lower speeds but you'd get a flavor for the track and the car.

Cheers,

Lou

Lou, Your car rocks! Wish I had the time to get down there for this event, but it's been a trying year for all things car/racing. Very glad to see that you are not in the same funk that so many of us have been in (what happened to the Columbus event?!). Please send details of your experience and keep the slant six banner flying while I attend to other needs (family, health, school, work). I have been taking care of distractions so that one day I might actually have time/$$$ to tinker in the garage again.

I am slowly forming plans to work up my car to one day attend an event like this one and hope I get a chance to talk more with you about it later this summer. Pittsburgh is a must for me and I have been holding on to secret dreams of defending last years N. Wilks performance.

I wish I could see the look on the faces of the Stang owners when they look under the hood of your car!

Thanks, Paul. Should be a hoot! The car is really feeling good - did some twisties driving to an overnight campsite last night - precise!

I'm planning on Pitt, so should see you there. Can't decide which car to bring, but likely the 68 with a few warmups since last yr.

Road racing is more expensive, but is amazingly fun. AutoX is much more affordable and I imagine also a blast.

Lou

Lou, I still have that motor from the 83 ish truck in the back of the garage.

Hoping it will help justify the trip down to your place later this summer. My daily driver is currently an s-10 pickup with a little motor and a 5 speed, so it's almost as economical as you can get for a highway trip and still bring an extra motor along.

You'll have to stop out at my place and get a look at it when you are up here and we'll pull the pan to make sure it's really the item you are looking for.

As for my car, I haven't even started it yet this summer and I can't seem to get any turn around from the local machine shops. Got the makings of a hotter machine, but I don't expect to get it together any sooner than next year. Good things come to those who wait. The Aspen should be breaking into the mid 19's  with the existing burnt out bottom end, just about where it started 5 years ago. Realistic plans and most of the stuff is on hand to get this pig into stable and street legal 17's summer of 09.

Sounds like good long term plans. I think I can set you up with a car to drive if you come down for NW, although I might have to take the consistent one this time??

Heck, if I come to your house to look at that 83 motor, I may as well throw it in the trunk and take it home, eh? Done that more times than I can count...

Lou

Yep, thanks to Curt (Useless) and Caitlin and my other friends Beka and Les for coming down on Saturday to see some fun and get "parade lap" rides in the Dart (60 MPH limit, no helmets). Beka also took the wheel for a few laps and had fun.

Car was running great all 3 days with no problems at all. One spinout at about 65 MPH on the Full Course turn 3, but went straight on the track surface to a stop. New Hankook z212 street/autox tires definitely took the handling up a little notch. I could hang with most of the fast cars in the corners, but their 400+ HP motors kinda ate me on the straighter sections.

Back when I started running this car on track, I was in the range of fast-ish cars, but this Cobra Mustang club had most of the cars with 420+ HP, including many C6 Vettes and Shelby 500 Mustangs in my group. Pretty much everyone had racing slicks... My guess is that Project V 2.0 would have been mid pack in the advanced driving group I was in. We'll see.

So, I feel good about how we did, had a ball driving the car, and feel challenged to make the car faster! All in all, a wonderful weekend.

Lou

Yep. Not sure which car to start with. Have parts of a turbo here and some plans for an exh manifold... I think 350-400 reliable HP on pump gas is a good starting goal.

Yes, Lou that should keep you busy for a little while. :D

Right now I'm hoping to get half of that HP. You've still got a few years head start on me, so don't count me out. In a few years when that Plumber money starts rolling in.....
