I pulled the speedometer cable from the rear of my cluster so I could pull the cluster and fix a broken trace on the board. That went well and all works, except the speedometer goes crazy and all over the place! I re-pulled the cable a few times thinking it wasn't set correctly, but nothing helps. It was working fine before I pulled the cluster.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Some times the cables get a set in where they like to be. Kind of like a old dog (this is my spot to lay down). Sort of move the housing around a little bit.

Sometimes on the 'late model' clusters the inner cable end doesn't seat enough to make things work right in the speedo...

Best fix:

Un hook speedo cable from tranny, unhook and reseat speedo cable to cluster, under car use finger to push speedo inner cable a bit to seat it into the cluster, then rehook it up to the tranny... (a good test to see if you did it right is to use a cordless drill on the tranny end before hookup and see if the speedo has a constant speed shown or it still bounces around....

Good Luck,

Once I accidentally stretched a speedometer cable while removing it - it did not relax back to its old lenght, and being a little long, it bound up and caused erratic speedometer operation. I used a Dremel w/ 409 cutoff wheel to cleanly slightly shorten the cable and all was fine again.

If the problem goes away when you only connect the cable to the speedometer part way, that may be your problem.

Thanks for the tips guys. It's weird, sometimes I'll go to the store and the speedo works just fine. Then I come out of the store and go home and the speedo is all over the place.

When it's working poorly, it bounces arouind the dial in jerky movements...or...at maybe 20mph it goes up to around 90mph and hovers around there.

I will try pushing the center section in from the tranny end.
