I live in the Los Angeles area. I am looking for a 170 engine. Aside from looking in junkyards, ebay, and craigslist, is there any other means of aquiring this specific engine. They're hard to come by, I don't really ever see them. There is one in the junkyard here but it's in a 1968 Dart and the whole car is for sale. Anyways, I need at least three of the 170 engines for projects I have.

Thanks

In addition to Craigslist,E-bay and the various SL6 online forums in your search for 170 cores;try calling engine rebuilder core suppliers.Check your local Yellow Pages as well as calling engine rebuild machine shops (those machine shops also might have 170 blocks in their "core pile"inventory) for local core suppliers. Thanks for the responses. Yeah, super gas mileage projects. Three people want the best gas mileage for their 1964 and 1965 A-Bodies. I figure a 170 would be their best bet with a lock up automatic transmission(enlarging the pilot hole on the crankshaft if engines are pre 1968). And a simple one barrel carb. If I can get this together and make it work one customer is also thinking of going with a gear vendors overdrive unit. These old cars are great and I like to see them on the road being driven daily. So gas mileage is a big factor on getting these cars back on the road.

mileage would be better with a 2 barrel manifold and carb, imho.

Not always true, most one barrel setups dont do to well from the factory on gas on our slants, but with some tuning they will do just as good as any other and the power can be very surprizing also. With a basic stock engine the one barrel is hard to beat if you know what your doing with it. A two barrel can do just as good on fuel, and if the engine is good enough the two barrel can make more power, but we where very surprized at just how much power the one barrel can make with a little tweaking and extra care with the setup.

On the 225 even we broke 24 mpg with our 1920 Holley after putting some work into it. I think the biggest problem is most of the one barrels are just warn out and old, plus the jetting is not right because of the changes in our fuel these days. I know my 1920 came with a 48 jet factory and it ended up with a 58 when it was getting the 24 mpg. Changes in fuel blend and the addition of ethenol effect the one barrel more than the two barrel, my guess is the one barrels where just setup leaner, or because of the extra barrel the two barrel just has more room for error.

I have often wandered if enough effort was put into the intake of the one barrel and the carb itself, then things like wet flow and fuel calibration was improved, just how much could be got out of the one barrel setup. A 170 would be a great platform to find out on.

I just went from a 170 to a 225, in search of mileage. I am right at the same mileage, 170-1bbl vs 225-2bbl, though I have TONS more power from a 9.23:1 otherwise stock supersixed 225. The car is MUCH more fun to drive with the 225. Mileage is 17 to 20 depending on my foot, and where the timing is.

I'm not sure if you're looking for a running motor or a rebuildable 170, but I'm in Orange County and have a 170 that I'm gonna pull from a '64 Dart to swap in a reman. 225, It has a hole in the top of one of the pistons. I'd be happy to trade it to you (minus the oil pan and pick-up tube) for a rebuildable 225 long block.
